Washington business district is on its way to become a historic business district

Washington’s business district may become a historic business district. The National Road Heritage Corridor made a partnership with the Washington Business District Authority and the Washington Community Development Corp. This partnership aims to have the city’s central business district designed as a National Register Historic District. Moreover, the organization organized a workshop on Tuesday to talk about the benefits of the designation. The workshop had a discussion about this with business and property owners. Donna Holdorf, executive director of the National Road Heritage Corridor, said this is a competitive advantage when we’re trying to attract developers and new property owners.

The Heritage corridor hired a historic preservation planner with the independent Clio Consulting of Pittsburgh Angelique Bamberg. Bamberg did a survey on the business districts over the summer. Angelique found boundaries for the potential historic district register. Also, Bamberg submitted a draft nomination to the state’s Historic Preservation Office. Bamberg said the district would include a total of 162 properties. Out of the 162 properties, 138 are buildings. Moreover, the boundaries would primarily follow the lines of the central business district. This boundary will include the railroad tracks on South Main Street up to Walnut Street, and from Franklin Street to College Street.

Bamberg said that she would make the nomination available to the public after the revision. The nomination will then go to the state’s historic preservation board in Harrisburg. The national park service will review the nomination before declaring it a part of the permanent record of American history. According to Bill Callahan, the community preservation coordinator for the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, the Thursday meeting eliminated the myths about district designation on national registers. The stakeholders and property owners had a fear of losing the ability to do whatever they want with their properties. However, the designated historic district does not restrict the management of properties by owners. The meeting cleared many misconceptions about the historic property. Washington has a very long history going back to the 18th century. This program will be a great way to identify assets and create tourism areas within the community.

FDA Approves Fish-Oil-Derived Drug For Preventing Heart Attacks

US health regulators have expanded the approval of using a fish oil-based drug for reducing the risk of serious heart attacks. The Food and Drug Administration or FDA has approved the broader use of Vascepa after an independent panel voted unanimously in favor of it. The decision was taken based on positive clinical trial data. Vascepa is a highly purified form of omega-3 fatty acid. It was approved by the FDA in 2012 for people with sky-high triglycerides. Triglycerides is a type of fat in the blood that can increase the risk of heart-related diseases. The FDA has now allowed its use in a group of adults with not so extreme levels of triglyceride and having multiple risk factors like heart disease and diabetes.

The approval for expanded use allows it to tap into the market of around 15 million Americans. Vascepa is expected to control about 12 percent of the US market in the next few years. Roth Capital Partners has predicted the peak annual sales of USD 3.2 billion by 2030. Drugmaker Amarin has set a list price of USD 303.65 per month. The exact amount paid by patients will vary by insurance and the company said it will provide financial support. In clinical testing, Vascepa reduced risks of potentially deadly complications including heart attack, strokes by 25 percent. A study was conducted for five years on 8200 patients and was funded by the manufacturer. The patients were already taking medicines to control diabetes or lower bad cholesterol.

Chances of heart complications were reduced by 25 percent in patients taking Vascepa. It reduced the risk of death by 20 percent compared with patients taking dummy capsules of mineral oil. Heart disease is one of the major causes of deaths in the United States. By 2035, 45 percent of US citizens are estimated to be diagnosed with some form of heart disease. The study included most of the songbirds like thrushes, warblers, sparrows with almost 52 species over the four decades. The birds breed in North America colder regions and spend winters in south Chicago. Body size reduced in all the 52 species with a reduction in bone length by 2.4% and body mass by 2.6%. These results suggest that change in climatic condition seems to change both the shape and body size of these species.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has revealed a concept design that can carry a rover onto the Moon’s surface. This robotic ‘pallet lander’ concept can carry gears and rover of weight up to 300 kg.  The concept of the lander, which is a sort of space pallet, is dead simple. It will involve landing site selection, attitude control, braking and a soft touchdown with its solar panels facing the sun.

After landing on the surface, the lander will decide its own course of action for the next couple of hours. It would take images of the lunar surface and characterize its surroundings for researchers on Earth. After spending around 8 hours, it would shut down permanently. Yes, it has not been designed to survive the lunar night. Weeks-long nights on Moon are generally freezing and airless cold. It is very expensive to provide the required power and heating infrastructure that helps lander survive in such an atmosphere. However, any kind of presence on the surface is a powerful resource.

Scientists Find New Strain of HIV First Time In 19 Years

For the first time in 19 years, a team of scientists has discovered a new density of the HIV Virus, which can cause AIDS. The new subtype of deadly virus belongs to Group M of HIV-1 subtype L. The new strains of HIV can mutate over time like other subtypes of HIV. This is the first subtype of Group M HIV to be identified after guidelines for identifying HIV subtypes were established in 2000. Doctors said that the new strain of HIV is just an outlier and people should not panic about it. Scientists asserted that at least three cases of new HIV subtype must be detected to identify it. The first two cases of new subtype were detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1983 and 1990.  Both two strains were quite unusual and were different from other HIV subtypes. The third case of the new Group M subtype was found in 2011 in Congo during the study conducted to prevent mother-child transmission of the virus. Researchers found all three cases to be affected by the same strain of the virus but at that time, there was no technology to determine it as the new subtype.

Public Health Department, Fresno County announced two people tested positive of West Nile Virus in Fresno County. Five other cases are showing symptoms but are waiting for test results. The health department of Fresno County is working with the district of Consolidated Mosquito Abatement and Central California Blood Center. They are collaborating to create awareness about West Nile Virus.

The Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District collected samples in central Fresno. Around 120 samples resulted positive for West Nile Virus. Samples from Southwest Visalia also tested positive. The District of Delta Vector Control and Health and Human Service Agency, Tulare County reported the finding of sample testing. In 2018, around fourteen cases of people were reported. These people showed symptoms such as body aches, headaches, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Vector Control District and Fresno Mosquito set around 119 mosquito traps in last year.

The Public Health Department of Fresno County is suggesting people take precautions. Standing water and dark clothing attract mosquitos. The Association American Mosquito Control suggests people. Follow the 3Ds of precautions. Drain, Dress, and Defend are the 3Ds of precaution. These precautions include emptying water of containers once a week, wearing long sleeves, light-colored, long pants, loose-fitted clothing. Applying DEET containing insect repellent, use of picaridin, IR 3535, use lemon eucalyptus oil, geranium oil, citronella oil, patchouli oil, thyme oil, clove oil and eliminating standing water sources also gives protection from mosquito bites.
