The death rate increases every year in the US, therefore a small increase in mortality rate is expected, but this year the death rate is supposed to increase by 15 percent, said the experts. It might shoot up even higher once all the deaths from this month are calculated. Experts have said that it is expected to mark the biggest single-year percentage jump since 1918. In 1918, tens of thousands of soldiers were killed in World War I and hundreds of thousands of people had lost their lives due to a flu pandemic. The death rate had increased by 46 percent in that year compared to 1917.

However, life expectancy might reduce by as much as three full years this year. The CDC has reported around 2854838 deaths in 2019, which have been 16000 more than in 2018. It has been regarded as good news as deaths commonly increase by 20000 to 50000 every year due to the aging and growing population of the US. The age-adjusted death rate has reduced by 1 percent in the US in 2019, while life expectancy has shot up to 78.8 years in the same year.

There have been additional deaths due to drug overdose and suicide as well amid the pandemic. The CDC has disclosed that there have been nearly 81000 drug overdose deaths until May 2020.
