Twitter Encourages Cryptocurrency As A Method of Payment, Allow Users To Tip Creators Using Bitcoin

September 28, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Twitter is apparently the first major social media platform that is encouraging the use of cryptocurrency. This is because the microblogging site has now allowed users to tip their favorite creator using Bitcoin. The company introduced the Tips feature earlier this year. The feature so far has allowed users to pay tips to their favorite creators via third-party payment services and platforms. The feature was initially made available to a small group of iOS users in the United States. But it has now been expanded globally. Moreover, the company is also adding more payment services.

Tips, which was initially called Tip Jar, will be soon rolled out for all users. Twitter has not fixed any date but has confirmed that the feature will be first made available to users on the iOS platform and later on for Android users. While initially users were allowed to tip with fiat currency with the help of more traditional payment services such as Venmo and Cash app. The company is now integrating Strike Bitcoin lighting wallet which will allow creators to receive tips in Bitcoin. Twitter said that it would allow users to add their Bitcoin address to the profile and then receive or send these cryptocurrency tips.

It is pertinent to mention that the microblogging site does not take a cut on the amount sent through this feature. The step to integrate Bitcoin is not at all surprising considering the fact Twitter chief executive officer Jack Dorsey has been one of the most vocal supporters of cryptocurrency. Dorsey even tweeted that he is trying his hand at Bitcoin mining. Dorsey said that he doesn’t find anything more important than working on Bitcoin. Additionally, Twitter has been working on recognizing Non-Fungible Tokens or NFTs. This will allow users to authenticate their collections of NFT on the social media platform. Besides, Twitter has also announced that it would soon launch creator funds for those who host Spaces audio rooms.

Toyota Unveils Overhauled Version Of Tundra Pickup, Pricing Details To Be Released Later

September 27, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Toyota Tundra has been one of the most reliable vehicles ever since it was launched in 1999. It recently got a place as one of the highest quality new full-size pickup in the 2021 JD Power Initial Quality Study. The company has now unveiled an overhauled version of the pickup. Dubbed as 2022 Tundra, the full-size pickup is expected to be available at dealerships later this year. While the bolder look is clearly visible, the vehicle has been updated with new technologies and will be more powerful. But the one thing that is expected to surprise many is the engine providing more power to the pickup truck is not a V-8 engine. Instead, the company is now offering two versions of a 3.5 twin-turbo V-6 engine. Out of the two options, one is a hybrid version that will produce up to 437 horsepower and 583 foot-pounds of torque. When compared to the 2021 Tundra, the overhauled version of the vehicle will be capable of producing up to 56 more horsepower than that offered by the V-8 engine. It will also offer a 45 percent increase in torque than the previous version. The normal engine will generate up to 389 horsepower. Both the versions will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Commenting on the new Tundra pickup truck, senior vice president of Toyota’s product development office Mike Sweers said that the company has adopted a fresh transformational approach while developing the new version of its extremely popular vehicle. “We took a fresh transformational approach in the development of new version. We cautiously mull over several things we had previously done,” Sweers said. The company would stop selling the 2021 model of Tundra with an 8-cylinder engine. The reason behind this change is that twin-turbo V-6 engines have proved their efficiency in pickup trucks. Also, several automakers are drifting towards smaller engine configurations. The reason behind it is that smaller engines have higher efficiency. Ford Motor surprised many by introducing such an engine. Termed as Ecoboost, the engine was provided in the company’s best-selling pickup F-150. The engine was such a hit that the American carmaker added other Ecoboost engines to its truck lineup. The trend is getting popular and auto manufacturers are offering alternative powertrains amid an influx of all-electric pickups. Experts feel that customers are now flexible when it comes to alternative powertrains. Customers are not running behind V-8 engines and are happy with alternatives. They are happy as long as the engine and the propulsion system are providing them whatever is required to run their truck.

The company has not released the pricing details as of now. Toyota is expected to reveal these details at a later date. It must be noted that starting price of the 2021 Tundra is USD 38,420. Toyota has shared other details about the pickup truck. The company has said that the top payload capacity of the 2022 Tundra is 1,940 pounds. It will have a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds. This is an increase of 11 percent and 18 percent respectively. The 2022 Tundra will available in several bed lengths and the options would be 5.5 feet, 6.5 feet, and 8.1 feet. Continuing with the trend of offering bigger screens in the vehicles, Toyota has provided a 14-inch touch screen as an upgrade. The company has developed a new audio system that is set to make its debut with the 2022 Tundra. In terms of looks, the Tundra looks bolder and offers a more rugged design. The vehicle has a massive front grille that covers the majority of the front of the vehicle. The vehicle has sleeker headlights.

CVS Pharmacy To Fill 25,000 Positions In One-Day Recruiting Event In September

September 26, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Ahead of the expected increase in coronavirus vaccine booster shots, CVS Pharmacy is looking to fill 25,000 across the United States. These people will be hired during a one-day hiring event this month. The hiring event will be held on September 24. The hiring by the Woonsocket-based pharmacy chain also comes ahead of annual flu shots. According to the company, the majority of hiring will be for “full-time, part-time and temporary licensed pharmacists, trained pharmacy technicians and nurses.” Apart from these, the company would be also hiring more retail store associates.

The announcement comes close on the heels of recommendations of an advisory panel of the United States Food and Drug Administration. The advisory panel recommended a third booster dose to those above the age of 65 years. The panel said that these people can get the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine as a booster dose. However, the advisory panel was not in the favour of booster shots for every eligible patient and voted against it. Commenting on the hiring, company’s executive vice preside Neela Montgomery said that the CVS always need more staffer during flu season but this year they looking to hire even more.

CVS said the new staff would help in administering Covid-19 booster shots along with supporting flu vaccinations. “While the booster shots are awaiting regulatory approval, the process to vaccinate those who are yet to receive Covid-19 jabs will continue. The new staff will also help patients who are seeking testing at our locations across America,” it said. The companies in the health sector continue to need more staff because of the continued presence of Covid-19. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 83 per cent of people over the age of 65 are fully vaccinated. This means around 45 million people would be eligible for booster shots. Meanwhile, the number of positive cases is once again on the rise. This time it is mainly because of the more dangerous Delta variant of Covid-19.

Health Experts Explain Most Common Symptoms Of Breakthrough Infection Among Fully Vaccinated People

September 17, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Scientists have said that the protective effects of immunization are at their highest levels two weeks after the second dose of COVID19 shot. At this time, people are considered fully immunized. After being fully vaccinated, if someone is diagnosed with COVID19, it means that the person has contracted a breakthrough infection. Generally, breakthrough infections are of the same nature as regular COVID19 infections in people who are not vaccinated. However, there are some differences between both kinds of infection. A study of COVID19 symptoms has highlighted the five most common signs and symptoms of COVID19. The authors of the study have said that headache, sore throat, loss of smell, sneezing, and runny nose are some most common symptoms of breakthrough coronavirus infection. They have said that some of these symptoms such as runny nose, sore throat, and headache are quite frequent among people who have not taken COVID19 shots. People who are not immunized deal with persistent cough and fever as well; however, these symptoms are less common in breakthrough infections among people who are fully vaccinated. A study has shown that people who are diagnosed with breakthrough infections are at 58 percent lower risk of having a fever as compared to unimmunized people with COVID19 infection. Many people who have been detected with COVID19 after vaccination has said that they have been feeling like a head cold. Experts have said that people who are fully immunized are at a much lower risk of being hospitalized if they are diagnosed with COVID19 after taking the vaccine as compared to people who have not been inoculated. During the initial stages of breakthrough infection, vaccinated people are diagnosed with fewer symptoms and are at a lower risk of long COVID.

Health experts have said that if COVID19 shots are not able to prevent infection, they make it milder, that is the reason, fully vaccinated people are found with less viral load. A study that has been done by scientists from the United Kingdom has shown that at least one person in 500 fully vaccinated people are diagnosed with a breakthrough infection. The authors of the study have said that everyone is not at the same level of risk. They have said that there are four factors that contribute to the level of immunity of vaccinated people. As per the scientists, the specific type of vaccine that people take and the relative risk reduction that is offered by each type of vaccine play an important role. Experts have said that relative risk reduction is defined by the ability of the shot to prevent people from catching the virus as compared to people who have not taken the shot. Scientists have said that in many clinical trials, the COVID19 shot that has been designed by Moderna has been proved to be 94 percent effective in preventing COVID19 infection. While COVID19 vaccine that has been developed by Pfizer and BioNTech has been able to reduce the infection by 95 percent and Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been able to cut down the risk by 66 percent and AstraZeneca shot has been proved to be 70 percent effective in reducing the risk of COVID19. Many experts have said that if a longer interval is left between two doses of AstraZeneca shot, the protection level offered by the shot will shoot up to 81 percent. Experts have said that the length of time since immunization as well as an essential factor; therefore, the debate over booster shots is heating up now these days. Early studies have shown that the protection provided by Pfizer shot wanes away after six months of immunization. Another preprint study from Israel has supported these findings. Experts have said that although it is too early to comment on the efficacy of COVID19 shots after six months of immunization, immunity offered by shots is more likely to reduce over time, said the experts. However, these studies have not been peer-reviewed by scientists yet.

Scientists have said that the emergence of different variants of coronavirus as well as a concerning factor. Health experts have said that most COVID19 vaccines have been tested against the original strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, therefore these vaccines might not be highly effective against a wide range of variants of COVID19. Public Health England has found that two doses of Pfizer COVID19 shot are faintly less protective against the Alpha variant of the virus. Scientists from the UK have said that the shot can reduce the symptoms of the disease by only 93 percent. Pfizer shot has been only 88 percent effective against the delta variant that has been circulating in the US and causing a massive surge in COVID19 cases across all states. AstraZeneca shot as well is less effective against the variants of concern, said the experts. The study on symptoms of COVID19 as well supports all these findings. The findings of the study have shown that after two to four weeks of taking the second dose of Pfizer shot, people, have been at 87 percent lower risk of having symptoms of COVID19 when they are exposed to delta variant. The authors of the COVID19 symptom study have said that after four to five months of having a second dose, immunity goes down to 77 percent. Health experts have said that these findings talk about average risk decline in a population. However, people’s level of risk relies on their levels of immunity and the ability of their immune systems. Experts have said that people’s vulnerability to the virus depends on some specific factors such as how exposed they are to the virus that can be determined by their profession. Experts have said that immune health keeps reducing with age. Long-term health issues as well can damage people’s response to inoculation. As per the latest report, elderly people who are dealing with weakened immune systems might have low levels of immunity that is induced by COVID19 vaccines. Experts have said that levels of protection derived from vaccination might wane away more rapidly among people with weakened immune systems as compared to the general population. Health experts have said that people who are at a higher risk of COVID19 have been given the shots nearly eight months ago; it might shoot up their risk of contracting the breakthrough infection as their levels of protection might have started waning away.

NASA To Send Rover To Moon To Find Water On Surface Ahead Of Landing Astronauts In 2024

September 13, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Finding valuable resources beyond Earth is crucial for planning a permanent base for humans. The Moon could be such a possible destination. NASA is preparing to send astronauts to the Moon by 2024. But before that, the agency will send a rover to find water on the lunar surface. The rover will be launched in 2023. Water is among other valuable resources that are required for survival. NASA said that the mission will be very crucial in taking the first step in making its idea of exoplanetary colonization a reality. NASA’s plan is to send a rover to the South Pole. It will search for water. It is a fact that the Moon hosts water in good quantities in the north and south poles. But the problem is that water is not in liquid form.

The US space agency said that the mission’s objective is to find water in different states on the Moon. Besides, it will also look for hydrogen molecules. Scientists want to understand the form of water and its distribution on the surface. They also want to know exactly where to look for water when humans travel to the Moon. It will be a VIPER Mission. It will use NSS technology to look for water molecules. It will conduct searches beneath nearly a meter. It will be NASA’s first autonomous VIPER Mission to the moon. Moon doesn’t have its own atmosphere. Therefore, the weather conditions are extreme on its surface. NASA said that the rover will be designed to survive hot and cold temperatures.

NASA said that VIPER will follow a road map as it will travel on the lunar surface. The agency is working to develop a lunar road map. This will guide the rover to remain on a path and avoid challenges it will face. VIPER will be powered with solar energy. It will carry a rocker-bogie suspension system. The rover will have the capability to move in any direction. Its four wheels can be steered independently. NASA will study the lunar surface to find water and more as it prepares for returning humans to the Moon after five decades. NASA aims to land two astronauts including the first woman Moon under its Artemis program.

Cracks Found On Russian Module Zarya On ISS, May Cause Air Leakage

September 6, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

A Russian module on the International Space Station has developed cracks. The cracks were reported on Zarya. The cracks are said to be small. But it may widen. Zarya was the first ISS component launched to the space station. It was launched in 1998. The module provided services like electrical power, storage, and more to the rotating laboratory during the early stage of assembly. Interestingly, Zarya is funded by the United States. However, Russia built and launched the module. Russia has confirmed that superficial fissures have been observed in some places on Zarya. It remains unclear if the cracks pose any threat to the ISS.

Russia didn’t confirm if the cracks were causing any air to leak from the ISS. This is not the first time cracks have been developed on the space station. The laboratory had earlier reported similar cracks in 2019. At that time as well cracks were found on a Russian module. The module in the question was Zvezda. Cracks on Zvezda then resulted in a small air leak. The cracks were fixed by cosmonauts in 2020. In March this year, cosmonauts undertook an exercise to fix the cracks as air leaks persisted. The module was launched in 2000. Russia last month again reported a pressure drop in the module.

ISS is used for conducting space research by astronauts. The first component was launched in 1998. It has been hosting astronauts from around the world since 2000 in low Earth orbit. The space station is the largest structure to be ever launched by humans. The ISS is so huge that it can be seen from naked eyes. In July this year, Russia launched its long-delayed Nauka module. But the module’s thrusters unexpectedly fired after docking. This caused the ISS to shift from its track. It was even shoved 45 degrees. It was, however, repositioned to normal. The ISS is a collaborative project of the US, Canada, Russia, Japan, and Europe. Meanwhile, Russia is planning to set up its own space station.

Facebook Adds New Feature to Protect Afghan Users from the Taliban

September 3, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

After the Taliban’s annexation of Afghanistan, Facebook announced on Thursday that they are introducing additional steps to safeguard susceptible individuals. According to a tweet by Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s director of cybersecurity policies, the company’s employees have been operating throughout August to do what they can to protect the security of its customers. As of July 2021, there are roughly 4,668,700 Facebook users in Afghanistan, accounting for approximately 11.8 percent of the country’s total inhabitants. Males make up the majority of these users (82.6%). The greatest disparity between males and females is in the age group 25-34, wherein men outnumber women by about 1,400,000 in number.

Since assuming control over Afghanistan, the Taliban has attempted to project a much more civilized image, although stories of violent attacks and deaths have weakened those attempts. Taliban gunmen have killed a relative of a DW journalist and have seriously wounded another of his family members. The Taliban are going door to door in an attempt to locate the reporter, who now operates in Germany. The social media platform is adding a function that allows individuals to lock down their accounts with a single click, prohibiting people outside of their circle from accessing their display photos or viewing their uploads.

Gleicher laid out Facebook’s objectives in a number of tweets. In order to safeguard Afghan Instagram users, he claimed the corporation is handing out notifications. In Afghanistan, individuals will no longer be able to browse or explore their friends’ lists on Facebook profiles, in order to prevent individuals from getting targeted.

After Joe Biden stood by his commitment to remove the US military, and stop a 2-decade-long conflict, the Taliban immediately took command of Afghanistan this month. The US has hastened the evacuation of thousands of individuals by cargo planes. New features on the social media platform were built using inputs from activists, reporters, as well as civil society organizations. Facebook has set up a dedicated operations center to deal with emerging concerns as they surface. Taliban is expected to take an extremely undemocratic action towards internet freedom, which is anticipated to hinder the usage of social media in the country significantly. Data regarding the social media market in the Middle East is widely available on various research platforms, if you wish to find more information, get in touch.

Amazon-Backed Electric Car Manufacturer Rivian Automotive Files For IPO

September 1, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Electric car manufacturer Rivian Automotive has started the paperwork with regulators for an initial public offering (IPO). With this, Amazon-backed EV startup is set to join the list of publicly traded companies. The list is growing at a fast pace with Ford, Tesla, and General Motors already on the list. The company said that it has confidentially filed papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The California-based company said is still working on calculating its size and price range. The IPO will take place after the regulator completes its standard review process. Rivian, which has companies like Soros Fund Management, Amazon, and BlackRock as major investors, has not commented on the development so far.

Reports suggest that the company would seek evaluation of over USD 70 billion. If this happens, the EV startup would have a bigger market capitalization than General Motors. This would be significant as General Motors is the largest automaker in the United States. But it would be nothing when compared to Tesla, the leading electric vehicle manufacturer. Tesla has a market cap of around USD 700 billion. The company is reportedly planning on building a pickup truck that would compete with Rivian’s R1T truck. Rivian is also working on SUV R1S.

Rivian shot to fame when Amazon announced that it would purchase around 100,000 electric vehicles from the startup. The e-commerce giant said that it would use these vehicles like delivery trucks. Earlier in July, Rivian raised USD 2.5 billion in a fundraising round. The funding was led by Amazon and For Motor. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said that the company is stepping towards the production of vehicles and hence it is important to push Rivian to the next phase of growth. “The funds will help Rivian to scale new vehicle program. It is also necessary for the global expansion of the company,” the CEO said. The company has raised more than USD 10 billion since 2019. Rivian is likely to start delivery of its much-awaited trucks in September. The SUV is expected to be delivered in the fall.

CDC And USDA Confirm Two Salmonella Outbreaks In 17 States In The Us Might Be Linked To Italian Style Meats

August 31, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

There have been two outbreaks of salmonella in at least 17 states of the US. The officials from the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Safety and Inspection Service, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Public health regulatory officials from multiple states are looking into two salmonella outbreaks. They have said that these outbreaks might be linked to Italian-style meats. The CDC has issued a warning stating that two outbreaks of salmonella have led to 36 cases and 12 people have been admitted to the hospital. People who have been reported to be sick have said that they have consumed salami, prosciutto, and other meats that are usually found in antipasto or charcuterie collections before falling ill. Health experts are at present trying to pinpoint particular contaminated products and find out whether these two outbreaks of salmonella have been linked to the same source of food. Health experts have said that until experts find out which Italian-style meat might be the reason behind people falling ill, people should heat all Italian-style meats to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit before eating. The CDC has said that heating food to a sufficiently high temperature can eliminate germs such as salmonella.

Health experts have said that nearly 23 people from 14 states such as Washington, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, and Utah have been infected in the first outbreak of salmonella. People who have fallen ill with salmonella infection have been in the age group of 4 to 91 years along with an average age of 44 years. Out of the available data of 21 people, nearly nine people have been admitted to the hospital. Health experts have said that around 67 percent of sick people have been men. People have started falling ill with salmonella infection from May to July 2021. The second outbreak has infected around 13 people belonging from seven different states such as New York, Oregon, Arizona, Texas, Washington, Minnesota, and California. With an average age of 41 years, infected people have been in the age range of 1 to 74 years. Around 31 percent of people who have been infected in the second outbreak of salmonella have been men. Out of the available data of 19 infected people, nearly three of them have been admitted to the hospital. The second outbreak of salmonella has started from May 2019 to June 2021.

Health experts from the CDC have said that the number of people who have been affected by the outbreaks might be much higher than what is being reported by the officials. They have said that the outbreaks might not be restricted to states that have been identified with confirmed cases of salmonella infection as many people are not tested for salmonella and recover from the disease without any treatment. Health experts have claimed that it takes three to four weeks to find out if an infected person has been a part of an outbreak. In both outbreaks, nobody has lost their lives so far. Health experts have said that people who are in the age range of 65 and above are at a higher risk of salmonella disease. People who are on medications for some core health issues that can limit the body’s ability to fight against foreign invaders as well are at a greater risk of salmonella disease. They have claimed toddlers who are below 5 years of age are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with severe salmonella infection. If people are dealing with diarrhea, bloody diarrhea that continues for more than three days, if they are not able to keep liquid in their stomach and keep vomiting, if they are feeling signs of dehydration such as dry mouth and throat, and dizziness and if the fever goes higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit, they should directly get in touch with their health care providers. Health experts have said that most people who have been infected with salmonella deal with stomach cramps, fever, and diarrhea. Experts have claimed that people start showing up symptoms from six hours to six days after being exposed to the bacteria. The majority of people recover on their own without any care after four to seven days.

Blue Origin Files Lawsuit Against NASA’s Decision To Award Artemis Program Contract To SpaceX

August 18, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Blue Origin has sued NASA. Blue Origin is a private aerospace agency. It is owned by Jeff Bezos. The company has sued NASA over the awarding of an Artemis contract. For its USD 2.9 billion Moon lander program, NASA has selected SpaceX. SpaceX is also a private aerospace agency. It is owned by Elon Musk. The contract is a part of the agency’s Artemis program. The decision to sue NASA comes after the Government Accountability Office denied Blue Origin’s challenge against the awarding of the contract. The Washington headquartered company had earlier protested NASA’s decision. Blue Origin in its lawsuit claimed flaws in NASA’s acquisition process. It said that the lawsuit will create competition and ensure fairness.

NASA had earlier picked up SpaceX for the Moon lander program. Both SpaceX and Blue Origin were bidding for the prestigious contract. Besides, Dynetics was also bidding for it. Dynetics is an IT company. NASA and the Department of Defense are its primary customers. After NASA awarded the contract to SpaceX, Blue Origin and Dynetics raised the matter with the Government Accountability Office. Following this, NASA asked SpaceX not to go ahead with the contract and asked Musk’s firm to wait for the accountability office’s decision. The office in July squashed Blue Origin’s protest. The verdict paved the way for SpaceX to resume the work.

According to the ruling passed by the accountability office, the space agency complied with contracting law while awarding the contract to SpaceX. The contract was about developing a lunar lander. NASA will use the lander to land astronauts on the lunar surface. NASA is planning to return humans to the Moon after 50 years. NASA has decided to launch three flights under its Artemis program. The third and final flight will take humans to Moon. The agency is aiming to launch the flight in 2024 that will see two astronauts including the first woman landing on Moon. However, Blue Origin’s lawsuit is likely to delay NASA’s plan to send astronauts to the Moon. NASA had hinted that it will select two lander prototypes that will be developed further. It was likely that both SpaceX and Blue Origin will get a chance to take forward their work. But a cut in funding by the US Congress forced the space agency to pick one between SpaceX over Blue Origin.

A Team Of Experts Reveals Wildfire Smoke Might Be Linked To Higher Risk Of Coronavirus Infection

August 18, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Scientists from Harvard University have conducted a new study that has shown that exposure to increased levels of fine particle pollution that is present in wildfire smoke might be the cause of thousands of more COVID19 infections. The study has noted that wildfire smoke might as well have led to more deaths among people who have tested positive for COVID19. Experts have said that some counties in California and Washington State have been badly hit by wildfire last year. The authors of the study have found that nearly 20 percent of COVID19 cases have been attributed to higher levels of wildfire smoke. They have said that higher levels of wildfire smoke might have triggered an elevated rate of deaths linked to COVID19 in some counties. Dr. Francesca Diminici, who is a professor of biostatistics at Harvard University, has said that the interplay between smoke and COVID19 infection is a deadly combination as the world continues to face these wildfires each year. Dr. Francesca Diminici is also one of the authors of the new study. Dr. Diminici has said that the pandemic has been one of the disasters that people living in Western America have faced last year. In recent history, California has witnessed five of the six massive wildfires last year. Currently burning Dixie fire has secured number two position in the largest fires list. As per the report, smoke from many other fires has covered Western states of the US in 2020. Experts have said that massive plumes have triggered record-breaking smoke storms that have suffocated states such as Oregon and Washington. The findings of the new study have been reported in the journal called Science.

Many past studies have shown that higher levels of air pollution can deteriorate the severity of symptoms of COVID19 and shoot up the spread of the virus as well. Nevertheless, it is unclear how the SARS-CoV-2 virus and pollution particles intermingle in the air. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has suggested on its website that wildfire smoke can cause irritation in the lungs and can make people more susceptible to lung infections. The CDC has said that wildfire smoke can also make people more vulnerable to the SARS-CoV-2 virus that leads to COVID19 infection. A study that has been released early this year has shown that the rate of COVID19 positivity has shot up majorly in Washoe County during the time of high levels of wildfire smoke. This study has been done by experts from the Desert Research Institute Nevada. The authors of the new study from Harvard University have created statistical models to examine the link between wildfire smoke and SARS-CoV-2 infection. They have looked at the data of 92 counties in Oregon, Washington, and California where wildfires have taken place from March 2020 to December 2020. During this time, nearly more than 73000 people have lost their lives due to COVID19 in these three states. Experts have continued to collect data on COVID19 cases and deaths in those 92 counties. With the help of satellite sensors, they have found exactly when wildfires have been burning in these states. They have used ground-level sensors to monitor the levels of fine particulate matter that is known as PM2.5. Experts have said that PM2.5 is a key pollutant in wildfire smoke. They have waited for a month to determine the health impacts of high levels of wildfire smoke. The authors of the study have seen strong evidence of a link between a higher risk of COVID19 infection and deaths and elevated levels of particulate matter.

Health experts have said that they have found that the percentage of the total number of COVID19 infections and deaths that are attributed to high levels of particulate matter has been extensive in some counties. The findings of the study have shown that the counties of Whitman, Wash, Butte, and Calif have shown some of the massive impacts of high levels of wildfire smoke on the number of COVID19 cases and deaths linked to the virus. The authors of the study have claimed that 18.2 percent of COVID19 incidents in Whitman County last year can be attributed to poor air quality due to wildfire smoke. Around 17.3 percent of cases in Butte County might have taken place due to the high levels of particulate matter in the air, said the experts. As wildfires have smoldered many huge areas of Western America in past years, health experts have witnessed many health issues that are linked to ingesting heavy amounts of smoke. Health officials have warned that smoke can aggravate respiratory issues such as asthma or chronic pulmonary disease. They have said that some mental health issues such as anxiety and depression as well can turn worse under a blanket of smoke. An air quality policy expert from the Washington State Department of Health, Dr. Kaitlyn Kelly has said that breathing in wildfire smoke with COVID19 infection can exacerbate the signs and symptoms of the patients. Scientists who have been studying air quality have claimed that it is possible that smoke particles in the air might contain the SARS-CoV-2 virus as well. Dr. Irva Hertz-Picciotto has said that when there is a high prevalence of particles in the air, these microbes can easily get inside the lungs. Dr. Picciotto is an environmental epidemiologist at the University of California. She has been studying the effects of wildfire smoke on COVID19 infection. She has claimed that massively increased levels of PM2.5 can promote the spread of the virus. She has not been part of the Harvard study. Dr. Picciotto has been monitoring the overall health of people living in California who have been affected by wildfire since 2017 in a long-term study. The authors of the new study have done a study last year that has found that air pollution exposure is linked to a higher rate of COVID19 deaths. The new study has found that nearly 41 percent of COVID19 deaths are linked to high levels of wildfire smoke in Butte County.

CDC Gives A Green Signal To COVID19 Booster Shots Among People Dealing With Compromised Immune Systems

August 16, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

A vaccine advisory panel from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has voted unanimously in favor to recommend an additional dose of COVID19 shot for people who are dealing with compromised immune systems in the US. After the panel’s voting, the CDC has immediately signed off on the new recommendation. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well has warded an emergency use authorization to the third dose of COVID19 shots among people who have not been able to develop sufficient immune response after two doses of either Pfizer’s or Moderna COVID19 shots. The FDA has said that there is a lack of data to discuss the odds of an additional dose of single-dose shot that has been developed by Johnson & Johnson. A member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to the CDC, Dr. Katherine Poehling has said that the committee has reached a consensus unanimously as the benefits of a third dose are remarkable and the negative effects of an additional dose are least. Dr. Katherine Poehling also works as a professor of pediatrics and epidemiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine. The director of the CDC, Rochelle Walensky as well has supported the decision of the advisory panel; it means that people with weaker immune systems will be getting an additional dose of COVID19 shots very soon. Dr. Walensky has said that the new CDC advice after the FDA’s decision to alter the emergency use authorizations of COVID19 shots is vital to ensure that people who are more susceptible to the SARS-CoV-2 virus can get as much immunity as possible through vaccination. However, the agency has not recommended COVID19 booster shots for the normal public.

The ACIP has said that it will depend on patients and their health care providers to decide who requires an additional dose of the shot and when. People will have to prove their requirement of an additional dose of the shot on their own. In such a case, there is no need for a doctor’s prescription or note. The advisory committee has not suggested any test to examine whether people have had enough immune response to COVID19 shots. There is no test authorized by the FDA to determine immune response after getting a COVID19 vaccine. The advisory panel as well as discussed if giving a third dose of COVID19 shot will be safe in children with compromised immune systems who are as young as 12 years. Later, experts have decided to recommend an additional dose for children who are 12 years and above and have been included in the Emergency use authorization of Pfizer shot. Moderna COVID19 shot has been authorized for use in people who are 18 years and above. This EUA is projected to be for people who are dealing with moderate to severe compromised immune systems. Dr. Amanda Cohn from the CDC has said that the EUA has not been given for people who are dealing with other underlying severe health issues where they might be suffering from mild compromised immune systems. Dr. Cohn has said that the intention of clinical reflections will allow some flexibility to health dare providers to examine patients’ compromised immune systems. Patients as well will be able to attest their compromised immune systems to get the third dose. The EUA will not allow people who are dealing with diabetics or heart issues and those who are in long-term facilities. However, more than 1 million people have already received the third dose of the shot before the CDC has recommended booster shots.

Dr. Kathleen Dooling has said that nearly 140 million people have completed their two-dose regimen of either Pfizer or Moderna’s COVID19 shot. Around 1 percent of 12 million people who have been given the single-dose shot that has been developed by the Johnson & Johnson have received a second dose of the shot as well. A recent study that has been done by the John Hopkins University has shown that people who are dealing with compromised immune systems are at 485 times higher risk of getting hospitalized or die with COVID19 infection as compared to other people who have been vaccinated. The CDC has reported around 7 million adult people in the US are suffering from compromised immune systems either due to the diseases they are dealing with or medicines they take. Most breakthrough cases of COVID19 are taking place in people who are dealing with compromised immune systems. The existing COVID19 vaccines that are being used in the US are only 59 to 72 percent efficient among people who are dealing with weaker immune systems. On the other hand, these shots are nearly 90 to 94 percent effective among the general public. People who are dealing with weaker immune systems are at a higher risk of falling sick with severe COVID19 infection. These people as well are at a greater risk of extended SARS-CoV-2 infection, said the experts. Dr. Amanda Cohn has said that there are many chances of greater viral evolution and transmission during prolonged infection and treatment. A small study has noted that nearly 40 to 44 percent of hospitalized breakthrough cases of COVID19 have taken place in people with compromised immune systems. It is a fact that COVID19 shots might not work very well on such patients. Experts have been saying that with higher rates of vaccination, herd immunity might protect these patients. However, it has turned out to be otherwise, as nearly a third of eligible people in the US have not taken even one dose of a COVID19 shot. When people test positive COVID19 even after being fully vaccinated, they are defined as breakthrough cases of COVID19. Although vaccines offer good immunity against severe infection, there have been around 7101 hospitalization and 1507 deaths due to the virus among 164 million fully vaccinated people. However, the CDC has said that these figures might be an undercount.

Tesla Confirms Production Of Highly-Anticipated Electric Pickup Cybertruck Will Be Delayed To Next Year

August 12, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Electric vehicle maker Tesla has announced that its Cybertruck will be delayed. The company said that Cybertruck will now be launched in 2022. The confirmation comes amidst ample hints that Tesla could delay the Cybertruck. Cybertruck is an electric pickup. The company said that the production of the pickup will start next year. Tesla has updated the same on its order page. The footnote said that the vehicle will not hit roads this year. Tesla is planning to launch three variants of Cybertruck. The footnote is common for all the variants. Tesla had previously promised to launch two variants first. Both are higher-end models — Dual Motor and Tri-Motor.

The Cybertruck was unveiled in 2019. Tesla had then said that the vehicle will become available in the market by 2021 end. But the company hinted at a possible delay with the timeline coming closer. Tesla said that it has completed Cybertruck’s engineering design. But the production will take some extra time. Notably, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had earlier said that the company is facing challenges in the production of the electric pickup. He said that the production is delayed mainly because of the features. He said that new manufacturing processes are needed for its steel exoskeleton body. Despite these challenges, Tesla during its second-quarter results announced not to change the timeline.

Tesla had earlier said that Cybertruck production will begin at Gigafactory Texas. But now the company has confirmed that the production will be delayed, paving the way for the production of Model Y at the factory. Cybertruck’s design is like a trapezoid. Musk had even admitted that Cybertruck could be a flop. Musk, however, said that he loves the design and virtually ruled out any change in the design. He had underlined that other trucks are copies of the same design. But Cybertruck’s design gives an impression that aliens have made it. Cybertruck is likely to come with 4-wheel directional steering. Besides, Tesla is also believed to be updating its adaptive air suspension.

Experiment Shows AstraZeneca’s Nasal Vaccine In Animal Models Prevents Covid-19 Spread

August 3, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

A nasal vaccine against Covid-19 infection could soon become a reality. Pharmaceutical major AstraZeneca has said that it has made significant developments in finding a potential drug that can be taken through the nose. It is said that the nasal vaccine in animal models has delivered some promising results. The drug successfully prevented the virus from spread during the experiment. The study noted that the nasal vaccine reduced virus concentrations. This results in curbing the transmission. The study was done in two animal models exposed to SARS-CoV-2. It said that the results will bolster the experiments to find the right nasal vaccine for humans. The company said that there is a need for further study as a breakthrough in intranasal Covid vaccination will help speeding up the vaccination drive and cover the maximum population at the earliest to win the war against Covid-19.

The study was done by researchers from the US NIH and the University of Oxford. Researchers said that the nasal vaccine was administered to rhesus macaques and hamsters. The method reduced concentrations in nasal swabs and viral loads. It produced mucosal immunity. This gives protection against SARS-CoV-2. Researchers said that animal numbers involved in the study were limited. But results are very encouraging and significant. Researchers measured if the nasal vaccine in macaques and hamsters limits the detection of virus in nasal swabs. The animals were exposed to the original Covid variant. They found that viral loads in hamsters’ swabs were reduced compared to hamsters. Besides, no infectious virus was detected in the lung tissue of infected hamsters.

Notably, the past studies in rhesus macaques with AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 intramuscular vaccine had shown that it protects from pneumonia. It didn’t reduce virus shedding from the upper respiratory tract. The study said that nasal vaccine protected the lower respiratory tract. The intramuscular vaccine provided partial protection. Meanwhile, researchers at the University of Oxford have already commenced the phase 1 clinical trial of the nasal vaccine on humans. The trial is being done on 54 healthy adults. Although vaccination against Covid-19 is going on in different countries, there are poor countries that are yet to begin the drive. The current vaccines are given using a syringe. It requires trained medical personnel. A nasal vaccine will cut this load. It can be administered by any individual. It will also help in covering vulnerable people at the earliest.

With USD 2.5 Billion In New Funding Round, Electric Vehicle Start-Up Rivian Raised USD 10.5 Billion To Date

August 1, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Electric vehicle start-up Rivian has raised USD 2.5 billion in the latest fundraising round that was led by Amazon and Ford Motor. The company said that it has so far raised around USD 10.5 billion to date. Rivian had raised USD 2.65 billion in the month of January and another USD 2.5 billion round in July last year. Earlier in December 2019, the company had managed to raise USD 1.3 billion and USD 1.5 billion before that. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said that it is important for the company to make plans for the next. “Rivian is all set to start production of vehicles. While it is a very important stage for the company, it is vital that we continue to have a forward plan. There is a need to push the company to the next phase of the growth,” Scaringe said in a statement.

Explaining how the company plans to spend the money raised in the latest round of funding, Scaringe said that it will be used to expand new vehicle programs. “Apart from investing in new vehicle program, we would use this fresh funding on the rollout of our products in the international market along with increasing domestic facility footprint.” The company announced the funding just days after Rivian said that it is planning a second manufacturing plant in the United States. The facility is internally being referred to as ‘Project Tera.’ Several states of the US have submitted the bid for it. The company is planning to announce the plant in the next few months and reports suggest that it is most likely that the groundwork would begin early next year.

Rivian currently has a manufacturing plant operational in Normal, Illinois. The company is most likely to manufacture its all-electric pickup R1T and SUV R1S at this plant. However, Rivian recently announced that it would delay the deliveries of both vehicles. The company said that the delivery of the much-awaited R1T is now likely to start from September and that of the R1S in the fall. Scaringe has blamed a number of issues including the supply of semiconductors behind the delay in production. However, this has not impacted the plans of providing electric delivery vehicles to its investor Amazon.

WhatsApp Testing End-To-End Encryption For Cloud Backups On Android To Keep Chats Secure

July 25, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

Instant messaging app WhatsApp has ensured that your chats remain private. Chats on the platform are end-to-end encrypted and therefore gives a sense of security to users. But this feature is only for your current messages on the app. There is no such encryption for chats they are backed to iCloud or Google Drive by users. This simply means that if there is a search warrant, these cloud companies would be required to hand over data access and this will include WhatsApp chats backup as they are not encrypted. But it seems this will be the case for just a matter of days as the Facebook-owned company is working on chat backup encryption.

There are reports that WhatsApp is now testing a technology on Android to independently encrypt WhatsApp backups on the drive. Some reports further suggest that the update has been enabled on version 2.21.15.5 of WhatsApp on Android platforms. At present beta testing for the feature is underway and it is expected that users will have the option to opt for this feature. This is totally understandable as there is the possibility of major risk. So when the feature is activated, both media history as well chat are stored in the cloud backups. This can be then protected using a password. But there’s a catch as in case you losses your smartphone and forget your password, it is almost certain that it won’t be possible to restore the backup.

As the backup password won’t be shared with WhatsApp, Google or Facebook, recovering the backup becomes impossible. The reports suggest that passwords will contain only lowercase letters and digits. The feature is still in the testing phase and it is not sure whether it will see the light of the day or not. But one this is sure that this feature will bring a major relief for users as they would be able to keep their chats secure. There are several other features that WhatsApp is testing and if everything goes well, they would surely be rolled out soon.

WHO Issues A Warning Of High Probability Of New And More Dangerous Variants Of Coronavirus In Coming Days

July 24, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently said that surging cases of the COVID19 pandemic in several parts of the world might lead to the emergence of new and more deadly variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the next couple of months. Professor Didier Houssin, who is the chairperson of the WHO Emergency COVID19 Committee, has said that the pandemic is not going to be over soon. He has said that the global increase in the number of COVID19 cases has indicated the ongoing challenges inflicted by the pandemic. The officials from the WHO have said that COVID19 cases in Africa have beaten their second wave peak in the first week of July. The death toll linked to COVID19 as well has climbed up by 40 percent. During the early stage of the pandemic, there has been only one strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. As the virus has started spreading across the world, it has kept on mutating and sprouting thousands of its other strains and some of these variants are more transmissible and contagious as compared to the original strain. The WHO has labeled four strains of the virus as variants of concern. The most recent variant of the virus known as the Delta variant that has been identified in India for the first time during the second wave has been spreading in more than 111 countries around the world.

Health experts have said that the Delta variant accounts for 60 percent of total COVID19 cases in the United States. The WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that the strain is going to be the leading variant across the world very soon. Over the past week, COVID19 cases and deaths have increased across more than half of the states in the US due to the slow pace of vaccination and the continuous spread of the Delta variant. In the last week, 47 states have reported a rise in the cases as compared to two weeks earlier. The death toll has shot up in 30 states as compared to a week earlier. One of the counties in Missouri has asked for additional funding to set up an alternate care site as cases have been shooting up in the state. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is expecting a rise in the number of hospitalization as well in the next four weeks. As per the forecast of the agency, the US might witness 11000 additional hospitalizations linked to COVID19 in the next 15 to 20 days. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that in the last week, COVID19 cases have seen a 10 percent increase worldwide. The death toll that has been reducing for nine consecutive weeks as well has shot up in the last 10 days across the world.

The officials from the WHO has said that as cases of coronavirus continue to rise around the world, new strains of the virus will continue to emerge in the future and the situation might be quite hard to control. They have said that vaccination remains the single most crucial weapon against the virus. Vaccines play an important role in disabling the virus from evolving into new variants. However, there are still many countries that do not have access to enough doses of vaccines. According to the University of Oxford’s Global Change Data Lab, only 25.8 percent of people around the world have been given one dose of a COVID19 shot. The WHO has pledged to get at least 10 percent of each country’s population vaccinated by September 2021. The global health agency has asked rich countries to share vaccine supplies with underdeveloped countries. Health experts have said that vaccination, well-informed public health, and social measures such as the use of facemasks, social distancing, and hand hygiene are the most effective strategies to fight against the virus.

Delta Variant Causes Spain’s COVID-19 Infection Rate to Become the Highest in Mainland Europe

July 8, 2021 by Jeffrey Herrera

The COVID-19 Delta Variant is rapidly proving to become a far worse obstacle to manage than previously imagined, particularly among younger generations of individuals who are yet to be vaccinated, and that the rate of contagion has now surpassed any of their neighboring EU countries. For example, the 7-day rate of infection has nearly tripled, from 58/100,000 on the 29th of June, to now indexing 156 cases per 100,000 individuals.

Although Spanish authorities did-away with a majority of national COVID-19 restrictions in May 2021, they state that a surge in both public and private gatherings above predetermined capacity levels, as well as an increase in the number of excessive outdoor drinking festivities being organized by mostly younger individuals who do not practice safe alcohol consumption habits, as well as the increased mobility of individuals across the country during the country’s tourism season, are some of the primary factors that further contribute to this increase in contagion levels.

This is a matter of great concern for authorities here, as Spain’s economy is highly dependent on tourism, particularly during the months of July and August. While Spain’s tourism minister Reyes Maroto states that over 41% of its nation’s population have been vaccinated, Spain now remains a country that is a “safe tourist destination”. However, as per EU guidelines, Spain has been flagged as red, which implies that travel to-and-fro either of these countries are discouraged. Additionally, both Spain and Portugal are now repeatedly emphasizing that British tourists visiting either country are not physically responsible for this Delta Variant spike, despite the fact that the number of positive cases in the United Kingdom has also been on the rise as of late.

What Spanish authorities have been requesting their visiting British and other European counterparts to kindly share is, either a negative COVID-19 test or to furnish valid vaccination certification or documentation upon arrival for a less hassle-free entry process.
