NASA Reveals Look Of Lander Concept That Will Make Landing Reliable, Cheaper

December 3, 2019 by Samuel Roan

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has revealed a concept design that can carry a rover onto the Moon’s surface. This robotic ‘pallet lander’ concept can carry gears and rover of weight up to 300 kg.  The concept of the lander, which is a sort of space pallet, is dead simple. As it is still a concept, no name has been assigned to it. So, as of now, space pallet will do. It is basically a space-faring delivery truck that will help NASA to uncover new scientific discoveries. The concept design emerged during studies around the VIPER mission. The concept pallet would liftoff atop a commercial launch vehicle like Falcon 9 rocket. The vehicle would take it into a trans-lunar injection trajectory. A few days later, the concept space pallet would perform the required maneuvers. It will involve landing site selection, attitude control, braking and a soft touchdown with its solar panels facing the sun.

After landing on the surface, the lander will decide its own course of action for the next couple of hours. It would take images of the lunar surface and characterize its surroundings for researchers on Earth. After spending around 8 hours, it would shut down permanently. Yes, it has not been designed to survive the lunar night. Weeks-long nights on Moon are generally freezing and airless cold. It is very expensive to provide the required power and heating infrastructure that helps lander survive in such an atmosphere. However, any kind of presence on the surface is a powerful resource.

There are not many details about the kind of equipment that will be onboard. The US space agency is working closely with commercial partners to eventually transport science and technology payloads to the lunar surface. Though the concept space pallet is only for rover payloads, researchers could work upon this idea for the future human lander. NASA is aiming to explore the moon as much as possible and this why it is planning to send humans by 2028.

Scientists Find New Strain of HIV First Time In 19 Years

November 13, 2019 by Samuel Roan

For the first time in 19 years, a team of scientists has discovered a new density of the HIV Virus, which can cause AIDS. The new subtype of deadly virus belongs to Group M of HIV-1 subtype L. The new strains of HIV can mutate over time like other subtypes of HIV. This is the first subtype of Group M HIV to be identified after guidelines for identifying HIV subtypes were established in 2000. As per Abbott Laboratories, it is essential to know what kind of HIV strain is in circulation to ensure the tests used for the diagnosis of the disease are effective. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious, said that the discovery of new HIV strain has provided a complete overview of HIV evolution.

Doctors said that the new strain of HIV is just an outlier and people should not panic about it. Scientists asserted that at least three cases of new HIV subtype must be detected to identify it. The first two cases of new subtype were detected in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1983 and 1990.  Both two strains were quite unusual and were different from other HIV subtypes. The third case of the new Group M subtype was found in 2011 in Congo during the study conducted to prevent mother-child transmission of the virus. Researchers found all three cases to be affected by the same strain of the virus but at that time, there was no technology to determine it as the new subtype.

Scientists of Abbott Laboratory and the University of Missouri have studied through for years to recognize the new strain of HIV as subtype L of Group M. However, it is quite uncertain that how this variant of the virus will impact the body. Around 36.7 million people are suffering from life-threatening disease of AIDS across the world as per the statistics of WHO. Almost 1.8 million people have been newly diagnosed with HIV in 2016, reported UNAIDS. The discovery of new subtype L of HIV reminds us that we need to research further into the mutating virus to end the pandemic of HIV.

NASA Astronauts Play Baseball Abroad ISS To Celebrate MLB World Series

October 30, 2019 by Samuel Roan

NASA’s astronauts aboard the International Space Station have very little to do for fun but they never leave any opportunity to celebrate, even when they are high above the earth. The astronauts Jessica Meir, Andrew Morgan, and Christina Koch recently celebrated the current season of the MLB World Series by playing baseball inside the ISS. A video has been released which shows Meir tossing a pitch to Andrew Morgan. The ball can be seen floating inside the ISS due to the lack of gravity. Morgan used a short pipe-like object as a baseball bat to smack the ball back to Meir.

Christina Koch than picks a microphone to announce that they are proud to be from Houston, home of the nation’s astronaut corps. Koch also talked about the moon mission under which NASA is planning to land a man and woman astronauts near the lunar south pole by 2024. The corps is based at Lyndon B Johnson Space Center in Houston. It is the US space agency’s center for human spaceflight, where human spaceflight research, training, and flight control are conducted. However, the agency’s headquarter is based in Washington. The baseball match played by the three astronauts was to celebrate the World Series between the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals.

Meir has also posted a photo of a baseball floating in the ISS’s seven-window Cupola module with the beautiful blue planet in the background. “This 28,160 km per hour fastball found its way to the ISS’ cupola,” Meir tweeted. We must tell you that the International Space Station circles Earth at about 28,160 km/h or 17,500 mph. This is not the first sports-related activity carried out inside the ISS. Earlier in March this year, astronauts shared images of ballparks that they clicked from space to celebrate the opening of the MLB’s 2019 regular season. The ISS astronauts had shared a video on Twitter that showed what 30 MLB ballparks would look like from space. The first pitch from space was thrown in 1995 to coincide with the opening pitch for the 5th game of the 1995 World Series.

It aboard a Sony-developed laser communications terminal, a powerful H-2B rocket, transporting six new lithium-ion batteries, some other equipment, and freshwater to the International Space Station. This freighter is unpiloted, set for its launch from the Tanegashima Space Center, at 2133:29 GMT. The spaceport is largest rocket-launch complex in Japan. Carved from rocky outcrops, located on the southeast coast of Tanegashima, it is overlooking the Pacific Ocean. HTV supply ship also called Kounotori 8. A Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, powerful H-2B rocket will drag Kounotori 8 into the orbit, heading southeast of the pacific on a 15-minute flight. Launch time is set for 6:33 a.m., according to Japan Standard Time on Wednesday. It is approximately the time when the earth’s rotation will bring Tanegashima launch complex under the international space station’s orbital plane.

H-2B rocket is around 186-foot-tall i.e., 56.6-meter. It is set to roll out Tuesday from Launch Pad No. 2 situated at Tanegashima. The launch crew will connect the freighter’s mobile transporter to ground electrical and fluid supplies. Microsoft To Launch Cloud Gaming Service In US Next Month

September 25, 2019 by Samuel Roan

Tech giant Microsoft will soon launch its cloud gaming service in the United States. The project xCloud, once rolled out, will enable its users to play video games from their smartphones powered by Android. xCloud is the working title of Xbox cloud gaming streaming service of Microsoft. Apart from the US, the Washington headquartered company is also planning to launch xCloud game streaming service in the UK and South Korea. There is no word from the company on when it will be launched in the rest of the world. The service will be rolled out for its users in the three countries in October this year, according to its official blog post this week. Interestingly, the company didn’t reveal the price of xCloud in its blog.

To play video games from smartphone, one will need to have a wireless Xbox One controller. The phone or tablet that runs Android 6.0 or later version with Bluetooth support would be required.

The company has already begun registrations for its public preview in the US, UK and South Korea. Corporate VP for xCloud at Microsoft, Kareem Choudhry said that the company wants people to become a part of its journey from the beginning. Kareem invited people to have fun playing and share valuable feedback. India-born Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had moved away from some consumer areas but stuck with gaming. While Microsoft has deeper roots in gaming than anyone in the industry, it lacks its own major mobile operating system. The original Xbox was released in 2001. It is believed that gaming accounted for 9% of Microsoft’s total business in recent years. Nadella also feels that xCloud would be another way to showcase the company’s cloud-computing infrastructure to its competitors. Also, xCloud also serves his vision of developing products that can work on all devices rather on machines created by Microsoft. Ever since Microsoft had in 2018 announced its game streaming service plan, Apple and Google, the two companies that develop mobile operating systems, have announced subscription to mobile game services.

One Day Someone will Commit a Major Space Crime

September 13, 2019 by Samuel Roan

Just add Space to any word, and suddenly any mundane word is way sexier than it was before. For example, Space Laws, Space Marriages, Space Babies, and even Space Archaeology! Now adding up to this list is Space Crime.  Tons of news stories have speculated upon what could have been the world’s first space crime. Recently in a letter to NASA and a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission, Summer Worden indicted her estranged partner, Anne McClain, who is an astronaut, of identity theft. The two agree that astronaut accessed Summer’s bank account while on-board the International Space Station. But according to McClain’s lawyer, this is something astronaut had always been doing during the couple’s relationship, and McClain persistently denies that she did anything wrong. Authorities are still inspecting the case.

Although this situation is pretty tame, identity theft is a severe concern and shouldn’t be taken lightly. Nonetheless, no one in this condition was in immediate danger. McClain doesn’t even use or moved funds around. Also thanks to signed Intergovernmental agreement that according to which the U.S. has jurisdiction in this situation. According to the agreement that if a crime is committed on the space station, and if it does not affect any other party then the crime remains under the jurisdiction of the nation who committed the crime. But according to the knowledge about human behavior that too on Earth, there is no reason that human won’t act poorly in space also. Space crime that appears poised is anticipated to get messy. There are going to be lawbreaking and cases of negligence, and human still doesn’t have any system to deal with that yet.

It would be smart to establish rules before a significant space crime is committed. According to Gangale likens space crime resembles the earthquakes, i.e., we know it’s coming, but we don’t know what we can do about it, at least not yet. There can be opportunities that we can completely reform our criminal justice system. However, the scenario is we are more likely going to adapt terrestrial laws to handle space crime. Although declaring that human rights can be applied in the space could be our first step, but laying out other explicit rights. for instance, right to oxygen, hence lack of it would be certain death. Also, rights to external communication, as a spaceship commander who can cut off travelers’ abilities to call for help.

Bluetooth Security Flaw Found in iPhone Devices Patched by Apple

August 20, 2019 by Samuel Roan

Bluetooth SIG, the authoritative body that governs the Bluetooth Wireless communications protocol has confirmed the existence of a dangerous security flaw. With the confirmation, Apple has taken the liberty to patch the issue in the iPhone devices by releasing the patch update. All of the Apple devices that are vulnerable to the issue will immediately receive the patch update. The vulnerability allowed anyone to brute-force the Bluetooth connection with the device. Bluetooth SIG immediately changed the Bluetooth specifications defines the dangers of such vulnerability.

Bluetooth connection is complete when one device asks for pairing permission and another device accepts it. Once both the device confirms the connection, a public pairing key is exchanged and the connection is activated between two or more devices. Once the connection is activated, a secure encryption key is generated making the data transfer secure. But, the issue with this was that the attacker could have fiddled with the encryption setup, and changed the configuration. According to the information shared by Bluetooth SIG, the attacker could change the requirements of pairing key to a single octet, or a single character. This editing in the pairing and encryption setup would immediately give pairing permissions to the attacker.

After confirming the existence of this vulnerability, the governing authority, i.e., Bluetooth SIG changed the Bluetooth Specifications to patch the issue. Also, the Authority asked the companies using the Bluetooth interface to change the standards. From now on, the companies must force a minimum of seven octets for pairing and encryption setup. With seven octets in the encryption keys, it would be much more difficult for hackers to brute-force the connection with any device. Apple took the immediate steps and pushed the update for all of the iOS-based devices to patch the problem. The status of Update for macOS devices is not known at the time of writing this news.

Apple Facing Antitrust Charges in Russian Federation

August 12, 2019 by Samuel Roan

Apple is always facing serious troubles with the governing authorities for a long time. This time, the company is facing the official Antitrust charges in the Russian Federation with the official charges in the Russian Federation against the company for Antitrust complaints. The Federal Antimonopoly Service in the Russian Federation is investigating the complaints received. Kaspersky had filed the complaint against Apple when the company changed policy towards parenting control app. Kaspersky’s Safe Kids app affected by the policy changed by Apple, and that’s why the Russian software company filed the complaint in Federal Antimonopoly Services.

In 2017, Apple contacted Kaspersky to tell the company that Safe Kids app is violating the App Store policies. Kaspersky baffled when Apple suddenly reported the change in policies without any prior notice. The app is live on the App Store from three years before the notice to Kaspersky. The company is arguing that if the app is live on App Store from three years without any issues with the policy, why is Apple is now providing notice to remove the app or follow the policies. As Apple advised the company to remove configuration profiles, the same would render the app useless.

This was not an issue for the complainant, but when Apple did this notice drama, they launched a new feature, named Screen Time. Screen Time allows the users to monitor the time spent on the device and also allows them to block certain apps. Kaspersky claims that the feature is Parental Control app itself. With Apple preferring Screen Time over the third-party app of Kaspersky, the company accused Apple of monopolistic practices. When asked for a comment, Apple spokesperson said that the Kaspersky used Mobile Device Management” (MDM), which is an invasive technology.

Cyber Security Firm Says WhatsApp Flaws Allowing Hackers to Modify Messages

August 12, 2019 by Samuel Roan

WhatsApp is not in the good position if we consider the security and privacy aspects. With the constant data theft and some security blunders, Facebook is under the flames of the authorities and also the users. Today, an Israeli Cybersecurity firm revealed WhatsApp flaws that could allow attackers to access the private chats and modify them without any authorization. The flaws would allow the attacker to modify the conversation in Public and private discussions of the users. This will increase the threat of spreading rumors and manipulating the users for illegal business.

Cyber Point Software Technologies Ltd is the cybersecurity firm that unveiled the flaws in WhatsApp. According to the claims by this company, WhatsApp has three possible flaws, that could help the attackers to alter the conversations. The first flaw executes the “Quote” function to change the appearance of the sender, the second flaw allows the attacker to modify the conversation text, and the third flaw allows an attacker to send a private message to someone in a group, but the message becomes public ones the receiver replies to the same. Fortunately, the third flaw is already fixed by the developer team at Facebook.

Facebook’s Spokesperson claimed in the statement that the company has already reviewed such flaws one year ago and fixed them beforehand. Also, the Spokesperson said that there are no such flaws present on the platform with such tight security provided by the company. Oded Vanunu, Check Point’s head of products vulnerability research, said that the flaws could impact billions of people if not fixed in time. Even though Facebook denies the existence of such flaws, the slightest possibility is still dangerous for the privacy of billions of WhatsApp users. Check Point security has already alerted Facebook a year ago, but only one of the flaws has been addressed till date, said Oded Vanunu.

Slack Improves Security to Prevent Data Breaches

August 12, 2019 by Samuel Roan

As Slack is getting popular and more prominent with the increasing number of users, the company had to increase the security protection on the servers. Slack engineers knew it, and they have added improved security measures to prevent data breaches and other issues that are related to the security of the enterprises. Last Year, the company announced the new encryption key management feature for the platform, and now they’ve announced the new security strategy with improvements in the safety of the platform and the data of the users.

Currently, individuals and big enterprises use Slack as the inter-departmental communication tool. Before using this tool, the big companies need to ensure minimum and maximum levels of security for this tool, otherwise, the attackers could easily breach the network and steal valuable data. In the post published today on the official blog, Slack announced the new security measures, that will benefit all of the users, especially the enterprises. According to the blog post, the company will introduce the FaceID, TouchID, or passkey protected login for mobile devices. Also, the users can report the stolen devices and remotely wipe the slack conversations from the device through API.

Even though asked by the community for a long time, the company has not introduced the End-to-End encryption for the conversations. A Spokesperson of Slack said that adding End-to-End encryption would limit the functionality. The users needing the E2E on Slack can use the Encryption Key Management feature to get cryptographic controls on the conversations. Not just these features, but soon, the users can prevent unauthorized downloads to the unapproved IP addresses, preventing data leaks from the network of the system. All these new additions and features will make system administrator teams at the enterprises safe about using the platform for team communication and management.

Microsoft Contractors are Eavesdropping on Cortana and Skype Conversations

August 12, 2019 by Samuel Roan

Apple, Google, and Amazon are accused of listening to the private conversation of the users using the voice assistant products. Google with Google Assistant, Amazon with Alexa Voice Assistant, Apple with Siri, and now Microsoft is accused of using Cortana and Skype conversions for quality control purposes. According to the small voice recordings shared by the ex-contractor of Microsoft, the company is extracting the conversation snippets from the Cortana and Skype conversations of the users. Microsoft is conducting the quality control program for Cortana voice assistant with the data obtained from the users of the same. Just after the controversy of Apple listening to all of the intimate conversations of the users, Microsoft’s similar program is a shocking one.

According to the investigation done by Vice’s Motherboard portal, the company is collecting the voice recordings from the users. Also, they are receiving the transcriptions of Skype conversations and Skype translations. To improve the features of the Cortana and Skype, the contractors used to listen to the voice recordings and provide accurate transcriptions. Also, they had to share the opinion of the voice clip whenever needed. All of the voice recordings retrieved from the users are 5-10 seconds of length.

Microsoft representative has agreed to the program and provided further details about the system. First of all, the company fetches the voice recordings through a secure online portal and then filters the conversations which have the name, address, mobile numbers or any other private information that may reveal the identity of the user. After that, the contractors review the audio recordings to provide the feedback, which improves the response quality of the voice assistant. Even though the company uses Secure online portal for transferring the recordings, it is still unacceptable for a giant like Microsoft to follow the controversial path like Amazon, Google, and Apple.

Google is Testing $5 Play Pass Service for Android App Subscription

August 5, 2019 by Samuel Roan

Google is currently testing a new service, which is named as Play Pass service. It’s a $5 Android Games and Apps subscription service, which will allow the users to get access to premium apps and games. With the $5 per month subscription, users can play the select games and access premium apps with the service. It works just like Apple’s Arcade service, which will have multiple games available for a monthly subscription. When the Members of XDA forum spotted the code references of a service similar to Apple Arcade, the experts started expecting the rollout of the service.

Now, the company is currently testing the service of $5 Play Pass service with a bunch of beta testers. According to the screenshots shared by the testers, the service is priced at $4.99 per month and comes with a premium selection of games and apps with no in-app purchases. The screenshots suggest that the service is in the final stages of development and is ready to rollout. In the testing version, Google is claiming that they will provide everything from puzzle games to premium music apps with these subscriptions. The best premium apps and games chosen by the editors are included in the premium pass, which is going to change every month.

At first, the XDA members spotted the service and then posted it on the forum. Later, Google confirmed the existence of such a service and that it is in the testing phase. Just before the launch of Apple’s Arcade game subscription service, Google is going to launch the Play Pass. With a wide variety of the games and apps to play compared to Apple’s Arcade, people will make the switch to this service. Even though Apple is signing up thousands of game developers for its Arcade service, Google has a pretty right side to challenge Apple after launching the service.

Samsung Announced Galaxy Tab S6 For $649

August 5, 2019 by Samuel Roan

Even though the Tablet computer industry is dying and transforming, Samsung is not willing to give up hope. The company announced new Galaxy Tab S6 tablet computers in the market with the price tag of $649. Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is the high-end tablet from Samsung in the price range. The company has packed some excellent hardware in the Galaxy Tab S6, which is making tech enthusiasts go wild. To make the Galaxy Tab S6 in the mainstream portable computers segment, just like Microsoft SurfaceBook and iPad, the company will include some wonderful hardware.

Samsung has included 10.5-inch 2560×1600 OLED display, a 2.84GHz Snapdragon 855, and a 7040mAh battery in all of the models. The base model of Galaxy Tab S6 comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the top-end model comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. For taking good quality pictures, the front side has an 8 Megapixel camera, and the read side has two camera setup with 13-megapixel primary camera and 5-megapixel wide-angle camera. One of the exciting features of this tablet is the in-screen fingerprint reader. This is the first time Samsung introduced the in-screen fingerprint sensor in the tablet computers.

The biggest blunder Samsung did with this tablet is not including the Headphone jack. The 3.5mm Headphone jack is highly appreciated by the smartphone or tablet users, as not everyone uses the wireless headphones. But Samsung has not included the 3.5mm Audio jack in this device. Even Apple has added a headphone jack in the iPad devices. Samsung is willing to ditch the headphone jack as the rumors suggest that the company is going to ditch them in upcoming Galaxy Note 10. The Galaxy Note 10 is scheduled to launch next week in a grand launch event.
