FDA Approves Abbott Lab’s 5-Minute Coronavirus Test Kit

March 31, 2020 by Jeffrey Herrera

Recently, Abbott, the medical device producer, has gained emergency approval from the U.S. FDA for its new coronavirus test kit. The newly-approved COVID-19 test kit will enable healthcare providers in a wide range of settings to gain results within a few minutes. Even more, the novel kit can deploy positive results in as less as five minutes. Besides, it takes 13 minutes for the kit to reveal negative outcomes. In a notice released on Friday, Abbott said urgent care clinics, hospital ERs, and physicians’ offices could use the test kit. As per the announcement, it will function on Abbott’s ID NOW platform. It is a small toaster-size portable device of the company that already offers potentials to detect strep A and respiratory syncytial virus along with influenza A&B.

Abbott has also announced that it is speeding up the production and hopes to deploy 50,000 tests every day to the American healthcare system. It will start delivering the COVID-19 test kits in the upcoming days. John Frels, VP of R&D at Abbott, said it is a crucial leap forward. He added one could get a positive outcome in five minutes and a negative one in thirteen minutes. John noted people could go to a clinic and literally get results at the same time.

Abbott’s kit is the second test that has gained approval from the FDA that healthcare workers can directly use. In the previous week, the FDA has permitted the use of Cepheid-made kit on the verge of care. Robert Ford, Abbott’s president and chief operating officer, said the COVID-19 pandemic would be battled on several faces, along with a handy molecular test. As per the executive, it takes a few minutes for the test kit to offer results. Even more, an extensive range of diagnostic solutions is essential to contain the virus. Amid ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the FDA has rushed to approve tests on an urgent basis and has permitted others made by manufacturers like Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. and Roche Holding AG.

Blood Donations Declined Amid Ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic

March 26, 2020 by Timothy

Hospitals nationwide are terminating elective operations and lessening the quantity of blood they offer. All this is to keep or retain the blood supply. As per the American Association of Blood Banks, rapidly spreading COVID-19 has resulted in the cancellation of more than 4,000 blood donations in the U.S. Even more, the termination has resulted in a loss of around 130,000 blood donations. Well, it is bad news for patients who depend on continuous blood transfusions. AABB’s Chief Medical Officer and the director of the blood bank at the University of Minnesota Medical Center Dr. Claudia Cohn said these circumstances have led to a massive and unprecedented loss of donations.

Currently, they are seeking to delay or lessen the usage of blood, citing that they are failing to re-fill the stock at a higher rate. The American Red Cross noted the fact is someone requires blood every two seconds. Thus it is a probably dangerous condition for the agency’s exceptional health crisis. Even more, the American Red Cross is stepping up on calls for healthy Americans to donate blood between the coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, Mark C. Poloncarz, an Erie County Executive, has said the region has enough bloodstock that could last for a few days. As per the executive, the cancellation of elective operations could assist them in expanding the existing blood supply.

Meanwhile, ConnectLife and the Red Cross are advising organizations to conduct local blood camps. Apart from this, they are requesting donors to take appointments before donating blood locally. Jay Bonafede, the representative of the American Red Cross, said much of the blood drives are conducted at places like colleges and businesses which are closed now. Bonafede also noted that countrywide they are down around 200,000 blood units. Meanwhile, the US CDC recommends that healthy people donate blood while keeping appropriate social distancing measures. For now, health officials have not found any link between spreading new coronavirus and blood transmission.

Study Shows Prudent Diet Can Improve Sperm Count And Quality In Men

February 28, 2020 by Jeffrey Herrera

A new study has revealed that sperm count in men from North America, Europe, and Australia has reduced by 60 percent from 1973 to 2011. Around the globe, men have been suffering from infertility crisis over the past four decades. The study says that an improved diet might be able to reverse this trend. Researchers have tried to establish a link between food choices and testicular function in the new study. The semen samples of around 3000 Danish men within the average age of 19 years have been taken and observed thoroughly. The participants have been asked about 136 food items they have been eating during the last 90 days. After the follow-up, experts have found out those men who have been eating western diet have the lowest sperm count between 109 to 138 million. At the same time, men who have been consuming a ‘prudent’ diet have the highest sperm count.

A ‘prudent’ diet is considered as a healthy diet that consists of a lot of fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, chicken, and water. While a western diet includes red meat, fried food, sugar-sweetened drinks, pizzas, and dessert. The author of the study, Feiby Nassan has said that the median sperm count of men who adhere to a prudent diet has been 68 million higher than men who adhere to the western diet. Men who have been following a vegetarian diet, which has a high intake of vegetables, milk, and eggs have shown better sperm count as compared to men who follow a western diet. The author of the study has asserted that dietary factors play an important role in the production of healthy sperms with high fertility potential. The findings of the study show that whole grain, omega-3 fatty acid, seafood, fruits, and vegetables are required for strong sperm production.

Feiby Nassan has said that changing diet patterns will be beneficial to ensure higher sperm count in men. Experts have indicated that men who ejaculate less than 39 million sperm per release have low sperm count. They have claimed that alcohol consumption, obesity, food chemicals, water radiation, and air pollution also affect the sperm count. This research has been published in the Journal of American Medicine Urology.

Deaths Due To Drug Overdose Shoots Up To 300 In San Francisco in 2019

February 25, 2020 by Elizabeth Moseley

Experts fear that San Francisco might be hitting an epidemic of a fatal drug overdose. The Public Health Department has released data stating that there have been more than 300 deaths due to drug overdose in the city last year. Experts have said that this three-digit increase has been driven by the synthetic opioid fentanyl. This drug is more powerful than heroin and pure morphine. San Francisco had seen a short-lived decline with only 186 overdose deaths in 2016; however, it steadily increased with 222 deaths in 2017 and 259 deaths in 2018. The Health Commission has claimed that there have been at least 330 drug overdose deaths in San Francisco last year.

The director of substance research at the Department of Public health Dr. Phillip Coffin has said that deaths due to overdose of cocaine, meth, and opioids have been stable for the past 15 years. However, fentanyl has increased the death toll in recent years in San Francisco and other American cities. He has said that drug overdose deaths have escalated in the second half of 2018 and the first half of 2019. Deaths due to overdose are generally driven by fentanyl. There have been nearly 162 deaths due to fentanyl overdose last year in San Francisco.

Authorities are trying to neutralize the effect of fentanyl’s potency by harm reduction tactic of getting people to smoke it rather than snorting as injecting fentanyl has the highest risk of fatal overdose. Health authorities are working round the clock to make overdose reversal drug naloxone accessible in the city to stabilize the effect of overdose. Nevertheless, there are experts, who do not promote harm reduction tactics. They believe that it creates a permissive culture of drug abuse and increases drug overdose fatality in the long run. Health officials are also promoting prescription of buprenorphine to bring down overdose deaths in the city. Meth related deaths are also on the rise, there had been at least 126 deaths related to meth in 2018.

Study Shows Moderate To Vigorous Exercise Is Beneficial For Adolescents With Depression

February 12, 2020 by Elizabeth Moseley

It has been proven that moderate to vigorous exercise is good for everybody. It improves sleep patterns, blood pressure and protects against many life-threatening diseases. Now, a new study has revealed that moderate to vigorous exercise can also prevent anxiety and depression as it boosts the mood as well. Experts say that parents should encourage their adolescent children to indulge in physical activity when the first sign of depression begins. The study has found out that even light exercise can help in protecting children from depression. However, unless the kid is an athlete, it is difficult to keep them away from social media. Most of the children are severely under the influence of new-age social media platforms and Cellphone, which is not a good sign.

This study has been published in the journal Lancet Psychiatry. The study shows that 60 minutes of physical activity at the age of 12 can reduce the risk of depression at the age of 18 by 10 percent. These physical activities include running, biking, walking, doing house chores, painting, or playing an instrument. The lead author of the study Aaron Kandola has said that we do not need to include more intense exercise in our routine to improve mental health rather it takes easy and light movements. Senior author of the research Dr. Joseph Hayes has said that many initiatives have been taken to promote intense exercise but we need to focus on light movement exercises as well. Dr. Joseph Hayes is a psychiatrist and clinical consultant at the University of London.

Experts have urged school authorities to come forward and include light movement in the exercise schedule of the children. They have said that it does not require much effort to fit these things into the daily routine of the kids. As a part of the study, around 4257 children under the age group of 12 to 16 years were made to wear instruments to track their movements over three days. Accelerometers recorded the physical movement of the children at least for 10 hours each day. These machines turned out to be better than other methods of movement tracking used in prior studies. The study has revealed that sedentary behavior in children has increased, as they grow older. The risk of depression has been reported highest among the physically inactive children. Each additional hour of sitting idle at the age of 12 is associated with an 11 percent increased risk of depression. At the age of 14, it has been linked with an 8 percent higher risk of depression. While at the age of 16, additional hours of being inactive have shown a 10.5 percent higher risk of mental disorder.

First Drug For The Treatment of Peanut Butter Allergy In Children Gets A Green Signal

February 11, 2020 by Elizabeth Moseley

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given a thumbs up to the first-ever treatment for peanut butter allergy in children. The new drug is called AR101 or Palforzia, which increases children’s tolerance level to the small quantity of peanuts. It also lowers down the risk of side effects of accidental exposure. However, it does not treat the allergy caused by the food item. Palforzia has been approved for the children between the age group of 4 to 17 years. It is available in the powder form, which can be sprinkled on the food. It will be sold for $890 per month. Peanut butter can be life threatening in children at times.

As per the officials of the FDA, peanut allergy affects nearly 1 million children in the US. However, the allergy outgrows in only one out of five kids. Peter Marks the Head of FDA’s Biologics Evolution and Research has said that there is no cure for such allergies. People who are allergic to peanuts should avoid exposure; else, it can result in severe and life-threatening reactions. The new drug Palforzia works on immunotherapy. Children are given a small but increasing amount of peanut protein for six months under medical supervision during the treatment. They are advised to take a daily dose of the medicine to be able to stand accidental exposure.

The agency has said that there is a risk of a fatal anaphylactic reaction that is still the same so patients should avoid consuming peanuts. Peanuts are common food allergen in the United States. Dr. Peter Marks said that when Palforzia is used along with peanut avoidance, the drug becomes an FDA approved treatment for preventing the risk of these allergic reactions in kids who are allergic to it. According to the American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, more than 2.5 percent of all children are allergic to peanuts in the United States. Peanut allergy is linked with Anaphylaxis, which is potentially a deadly condition. People with such conditions require immediate medical attention. Hive, cramping, indigestion, swelling, dizziness, and even fainting are common symptoms of peanut allergy.

FDA Approves Fish-Oil-Derived Drug For Preventing Heart Attacks

December 20, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

US health regulators have expanded the approval of using a fish oil-based drug for reducing the risk of serious heart attacks. The Food and Drug Administration or FDA has approved the broader use of Vascepa after an independent panel voted unanimously in favor of it. The decision was taken based on positive clinical trial data. Vascepa is a highly purified form of omega-3 fatty acid. It was approved by the FDA in 2012 for people with sky-high triglycerides. Triglycerides is a type of fat in the blood that can increase the risk of heart-related diseases. The FDA has now allowed its use in a group of adults with not so extreme levels of triglyceride and having multiple risk factors like heart disease and diabetes.

The approval for expanded use allows it to tap into the market of around 15 million Americans. Vascepa is expected to control about 12 percent of the US market in the next few years. Roth Capital Partners has predicted the peak annual sales of USD 3.2 billion by 2030. Drugmaker Amarin has set a list price of USD 303.65 per month. The exact amount paid by patients will vary by insurance and the company said it will provide financial support. In clinical testing, Vascepa reduced risks of potentially deadly complications including heart attack, strokes by 25 percent. A study was conducted for five years on 8200 patients and was funded by the manufacturer. The patients were already taking medicines to control diabetes or lower bad cholesterol.

Chances of heart complications were reduced by 25 percent in patients taking Vascepa. It reduced the risk of death by 20 percent compared with patients taking dummy capsules of mineral oil. Heart disease is one of the major causes of deaths in the United States. By 2035, 45 percent of US citizens are estimated to be diagnosed with some form of heart disease. The American Heart Association said that it would result in annual treatment costs in excess of USD 1 trillion. Millions of Americans take omega-3 fatty acids for supposed heart benefits. But the dosages are way below Vascepa’s potency.

Watching television is a bad habit that increases childhood obesity

December 13, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

Watching television is the most impactful lifestyle habit that is related to childhood obesity, as per the study published on Wednesday. The study was conducted by a team of researchers managed by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health. Parents were requested to complete questionnaires on their kids’ lifestyle habits. The researchers considered five activities: physical activity, TV time, plant-based food eating, sleep time, and ultra-processed food eating. In order to examine these, they measured the children’s body mass index, blood pressure, and waist circumference who were at four and seven years of age. Martine Vrijheid, a researcher in the ISGlobal Programmed on Childhood & Environment and co-leader of the study, said that unhealthy behaviors be likely to join and interconnect.

The study published in the journal Pediatric Obesity was on the basis of data obtained from 1,480 children joined in a Spanish research network. The study was on the impact of pollutants throughout pregnancy and their special effects on offspring. The researchers also measured the time used up by children on other sedentary activities, containing a drawing, doing puzzles, and reading. These activities did not appear related to obesity or overweight. One theory is that kids may look at advertisements for beverages and food that have high sugar, saturated fat, and salt while watching programs.

The study also tells that looking at TV has interrupted sleep. Persons who commonly sleep fewer than seven hours a night have lesser levels of specific microRNAs, according to another study available in the journal Experimental Physiology. The MicroRNAs molecules act as biological indicators of cardiovascular health. MicroRNAs display is the main role in regulating vascular health. The public health movements targeted to decrease childhood obesity is not stopping the problem. The American youngsters share between 2 and 19 years old, having obese increased from 14% in 1999 to 18.5% in 2016. There was also a notable jump in obesity between the 2 to 5 years old children with 14%.

Charity says “ Holy Grail” of cancer treatment masks progress

December 10, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

A charity found that thing with cancer therapy was the “holy grail” of the disease’s research, meaning the public was unaware of developments that made patients live longer. The Cancer Research Institute (ICR) said that this effect could lead to an overly binary “cure or nothing” approach to cancer that might not help. Not only masking progress but also not understanding how to best deal with future disease.

A survey by the association found that, although people diagnosed with cancer have improved their lives by ten years. And their quality of life has improved, very few people believe that cancer can be organized in the long term. From the last ten years, it has been observed that patients tend to live more ten years from the time cancer is diagnosed. Therefore making it more manageable. In contrast, more than 40% said they believe they can treat heart disease for the long term, and more than 70% of people say they can treat diabetes. The Cancer Research Institute a charity and research institute, has focused mainly on treatment neglected the considerable progress achieved. The ICR states that the reality of many advanced cancers is that there is no cure yet, but they are trying. To provide personalized treatment so that patients’ life can be extended. The charity is shouting for more considerable attention to the ability of cancer resistance treatments to make more people live longer. A poll of 2,100  members and 365 patients found that one-third have misinterpreted the widely used term “clear all”. To indicate that the disease has cured completely than just being untraceable and still May relapse. 20% of the public and 17% of cancer patients do not know that cancer can resist treatment and relapse.

Hence there are different treatments for cancer like radiation therapy, surgery, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy, etc. Health experts are trying to discover more and more treatments and medicines to finish cancer.

Excess weight will weaken the influenza shot

November 27, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

The Centers for Virus Control and Avoidance says flu period is beginning to rise, and with a vaccine, it’s not too late to lower your risk. But experts have arisen to realize that for persons who are weighty or obese, flu vaccines are less active. Since excess weight distresses more than two-thirds of the U.S. mature population, this is a severe deficiency. Researchers are studying why this is the case, with an eye to better vaccines for flu. This topic came to light during the flu pandemic in 2009, the 21st century’s first significant epidemic. Health officials found that the grip took a specific toll on meaningfully weighty persons. We had not ever seen that previously, states  Schultz-Cherry, a specialist in infectious diseases at St. J.C Research Hospital.

The virus will increase and spread more deeply in your lungs, which is not what you want during influenza infection, she says. So people didn’t just get sick; they were more likely to spread the virus as well. That has the potential to exacerbate an outbreak of flu. Schultz-Cherry notes that this argument illustrated in the University of Maryland’s review of volunteers. In reality, the scholars who were overweight had more viruses in their respired breath, according to Schultz-Cherry.

During the flu season, additional research team researched Nicaragua’s families and create that large people hut the virus another day on average associated with people with lower body load. In persons who had not at all or rare symptoms, the effect was more significant. What is particularly disturbing to the researchers is that the vaccine does not function as well said Melinda Beck, a health professor at the Academy of NC. Hill. She’s been reviewing the result of fatness on the ability of a person to fight sour infections. She observed at the different double slices of the exempted organism one includes antibodies, which are proteins capable of neutralizing viruses; the other involves cells that assist in fighting infection.

Mental Wellbeing And Stress Management Emerges As Key Challenge For Modern-Day Cricketers

November 22, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

Along with physical fitness, mental health has also been an essential factor in the performance of new age cricketers. Relentless schedules, intense public scrutiny, fear of failure have badly affected the career graphs of many crickets around the world. The issue grabbed a lot of limelight when three top players in Australia stepped aside from the game due to mental health reasons. Glen Maxwell, Will Pucovski, and Nic Maddison backed out of the first test series against Pakistan as they experienced issues regarding their mental wellbeing. The administration has not declared the specifics of the problem yet. However, Australian cricketer Ben Olive said that intense scrutiny and rigorous schedule are two important factors that affect the mental health of sportspeople.

Mental issues like anxiety, depression can rule the players out of the game as surely as an injured arm or a torn hamstring. As sports have turned hyper-professional, it has left no room for players to look after their mental wellbeing. Many players have not been able to sustain their growth, as they have not been able to manage performance anxiety. They find it difficult to fit into the bullying culture of media and the public. In the course of managing their career, they eventually lose the love for the game, which puts a full stop to their career at the end. High profile cricketer Greg Chappel has suffered a public mental breakdown in 1981 one-day international. Greg Chappel has been tremendously packed during that time. He has been playing 10 one-day international, 6 test matches, along with home and away Sheffield Shield and domestic one-day programs. Chappel’s breakdown was a surface indicator of darker and deeper mental pressure.

The officials of Australian Sports Science and Sports Medicines have said that they are devising ways to deal with the problem. They said that Australian cricket is committed to introducing means to help players with their mental issues. Providing sufficient relaxing time can be an effective way to address the mental health of the players. Counseling sessions can help players to fight anxiety issues. Players need to be away from the game for some time to gain more clarity. It is quite essential to maintain the mental comfort of sportspeople.

Researchers from UCSF reveal that genetics make it possible for people to be natural short sleepers

September 13, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

University of California, San Francisco conducted research which revealed that there is a second gene as well which makes it possible for some people to sleep for lesser hours and still feel the same refreshment. In the year 2009, a study from researchers at UCSF identified a gene DEC2 which promotes natural short sleep. People with this gene feel rested with less than the average number of hours of sleep. According to discovery made in 2009, people with DEC2 feel rested after less than 6.5 hours of sleep. The research study continued and after ten years, revealed that there is another gene ADRB1 which is responsible for natural short sleep. Also, there could be few more genes which could allow individuals to sleep for a short duration.

Ying-Hui Fu, who is a researcher at UFSC, led this study stated that many other genes are being evaluated. Before the discovery of short sleep gene, almost nobody thought of sleep duration in terms of genes. The study conducted in 2009 uncovered that people with gene mutation slept for about 6.25 hours and participant without gene mutation slept for about 8 hours.

Also, people with gene mutation are not affected by sleep deprivation. Individuals with short sleep gene are even flexible with changes in sleep pattern and schedules. The occurrence of these genes is very rare. Presently, a significant chunk of population is sleep deprived due to several factors such as excess work pressure, use of social media, etc. not sleeping adequately has severe consequences on long term health. One is at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, etc. Several people sleep for short hours and claim they don’t require long sleeping hours, but mainly it is due to strong will power. The motive behind this research was not to determine rate of occurrence of gene mutation but find out how sleep is regulated and make it efficient. If researchers could help everyone to sleep better.

Soy and soy products may be harmful to women’s health

September 11, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

Soybean is consumed in many ways. It is used in the various dishes, mostly in Asian populations. The soybean has the only bean used in the Western diet. This is around from the 60 years. Now a day, most of the supermarkets are filled with soy products, soy-based meat replacements, and soy burgers. Soya has a quality with a lower risk of heart problems as compared to other diets. Soya used as the best source of unsaturated fatty acids, protein, B vitamins, iron, fiber, zinc, and calcium; it is progressively popular as a healthy replacement of meat. This is mainly in the West. But more peoples are connecting soya with health from the last ten years. But fear has come that soya can disturb our hormones.

The soy’s market is down to its high content of isoflavones. Isoflavones have more estrogenic properties. That means they act like estrogen. Oestrogen is known as the primary female sex organ, which is bound with the estrogen receptor in the women body. The main issue is the estrogen can lead to the growth of breast cancer. The scientists researched that and concluded the result. They said that soya effects in the body in the last few years. The answer about isoflavones that it is harmful or not is not cleared by the scientist. And frequently it seems that soya defends to cancer risk rather than making it problematic. Still why soya is good and doesn’t have any issue in that is not cleared.

Soya also has connected with falling breast cancer’s chances. The population research carried out among the 6,000 women having breast cancer found that almost 21% decrease death rate as compared to those women who consumed more soya. This research is carried out by an associate professor of Tufts University in Massachusetts; Fang Fang Zhang. Soya has more benefits for women with hormone-receptor-negative breast cancer. It has benefits in the violent type of breast cancer where tumors lack progesterone and estrogen receptors. So that’s why they don’t reply well to hormone treatments.

Nutritionist reveals the myth people still believe about metabolism

September 11, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

According to a well-known nutritionist, a few fitness trainers and nutritionists suggested that one needs to alter their metabolism for losing fat. These people believed that one needs to consume food every 3 hours. These metabolism-boosting methods don’t actually help much, and people often find that fat content is not reduced substantially in the long term. It also hampers the body clock if such practices are adopted.

By definition, metabolism is a chemical process that takes place in living beings to maintain life. These fitness influencers believed that by consuming low-calorie food frequently throughout the day helps in burning fats, as the digestion process takes about 10% of calories consumed. But these methods are unproven and not scientific. These are based on thermos effect of food. Altering the body’s metabolic rate could damage any human beings in the long run. Also, it depends on one’s routine, as well. Some people prefer to consume only 2 or 3 heavy meals throughout the day. The calories one burns are almost the same either by consuming six-light snacks or just two heavy meals. Also, the trend of eating after every certain interval to control and reduce body fat without doing much of exercise was started around 2006.

People these days decide their meals and workout plans based on Instagram, Pinterest or facebook videos. Maintaining a calorie deficit diet is essential for reducing fats. As obesity is a critical problem these days due to many factors such as modern sedentary lifestyle, eating high-calorie junk food and beverages, etc. also, obesity amongst the young generation. More than one-third of the global population is overweight. Also, rather than implementing such unscientific techniques, sticking to a good diet plan for a prolonged period of time is beneficial. It helps immensely to fat loss as well as the overall health of individuals.

Democrats Are Trying To Organize An Event To Check Mental Health Of Trump

June 13, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

Donald Trump has always been in media coverage because of his blunt decisions and controversial tweets. The way he is behaving from the last couple of days has worried not only ordinary people but also some Democrats also. Now because of that situation, some group of Democrats is trying to organize an event which will discuss the mental health of president Donald Trump. House Budget Committee Chairman John Yarmuth along with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) will host Dr. Bandy Lee, who is a famous psychiatrist and will discuss the problems relating to Trump’s mental health.

There have been many occasions where it’s been found that Trump is behaving weird, but since now Democrats also think that way which makes this issue more dangerous. Yarmuth said that it’s necessary to get experts to the opinion on Trump’s bad mental health because since he has become president of the USA, his condition has got worse. Experts think it’s necessary to check the health condition of the president because that could be a national threat from which no one would be able to get out quickly. Donald Trump has a reputation of not so excellent among Democrats because he has continuously criticized them.

However, now these same people think it’s better to study the mental health condition of Donald Trump since people’s lives could be in danger. However, this is not the first time when someone has called for checking up on President’s mental health because in 2016 election also this topic got viral. Trump had made lots if controversial statements and some decisions like a trade war. Now Democrats are questioning his ability on whether he can handle a presidential post or not. This event is going to happen in next month, and it will be interesting to see how Trump is going to react to this whole issue.

April 17, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

The knowledge you have about your sleeping habits may not be the fact. Wrong knowledge about it could be harmful to your mental and physical health. Researchers at NYU Langone Health’s School of Medicine recently conducted a study about sleeping myths and facts on Tuesday. The researchers first went through about 8,000websites and gathered information about sleeping habits. This data was presented to a team of experts in the sleep medicine industry. These experts determined the facts and myths, which are explained below.

There is a myth that says adults need five or lesser hours of sleep. For efficient working in the daytime, not falling sick and enjoy your life, sleep is an important factor. Whether adults or people of any age, everyone needs more than 7 hours of sleep daily. Lesser sleep can lead to cardiovascular diseases and early deaths. Other myth says that it is healthy to fall asleep instantly anywhere and at any time. But, it is a sign that you are not sleeping enough at once, so you complete the rest of your sleep anywhere, anytime. Another myth says that your body can adapt to less sleeping. There are four phases of sleep necessary to restore fully. So, less sleeping doesn’t complete those phases and are unhealthy.

Another myth is about snoring while sleeping. People believe that snoring is not harmful. However, loud snoring means there is an interruption in breathing. It could lead to sleep apnea in the long run. So, take efforts to stop snoring. Another myth says drinking alcohol before sleeping could help you fall asleep, but it is very unhealthy. People also believe that to fall asleep, one should stay in bed with closed eyes and wait until you sleep. But, a healthy sleeper requires a maximum of 15 minutes to sleep.

Other myth says that it is okay to sleep anytime in a day, but the night is the only right time. Some people believe watching television before sleeping can relax you, which is a myth again. Another myth- remembering your dreams is good. No, because the brain rests deeply when we are in dreams.

Dangerous Mosquitoes that Transmit Dengue Fever and Zika Virus Could Reach 1 Billion People

April 5, 2019 by Elizabeth Moseley

Disease-carrying mosquitoes need favorable atmospheric conditions like high temperatures. Due to global warming and rise in temperature, dangerous mosquitoes that transmit diseases like dengue fever and Zika virus are increasing in high numbers. As per a new study, greenhouse gases that are emitted continuously provide a conducive environment to disease-carrying mosquitoes. Over the next 60 years, about 1 billion people are expected to be exposed to two species these mosquitoes. Especially the US, Europe and Canada will face higher exposure.

A mosquito bite isn’t limited to effects like superficial skin irritation. They carry fatal diseases with them. Malaria, Zika virus, dengue, etc. are transmitted by mosquitoes. As per the World Health Organization, mosquitoes are one of the most deadly creatures on earth as they lead to millions of deaths in the world per year. There are two species of mosquitoes that affect human health by transmitting Zika virus and chikungunya virus. These bugs need temperatures between 70-90 degrees Fahrenheit to grow favorably.

In the tropics and subtropics, dengue fever is the single leading cause of deaths of people. Every year, almost 400 million people are infected with dengue fever as per the reports of CDC. Currently, these disease-carrying mosquitoes are only found in a few regions that have higher temperatures. However, as earth is getting warmer, these species are growing. Last 4-5 years have been the hottest till date as per the records. These bugs were found near the equatorial areas till now, but they are slowly expanding in the north and south as well.

In the journal PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, a new study was published which informs about how the climatic changes are affecting the growth of some virus-carrying mosquitoes. The study says that in the next 30 years, about 500 million people will be at risk of exposure to these bugs. By the year 2080, more than 1 billion new people will be at risk of getting affected by the mosquitoes if the greenhouse gases continue to be emitted.
