NASA Reveals Landing Site For Its First-Ever Robotic Moon Rover To Hunt Water-Ice

September 24, 2021 by Spencer Edward

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has decided to send its first-ever robotic rover to hunt water-ice on Moon. The Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover or VIPER has been scheduled to land on the Moon surface in the year 2023. Now, the US space agency has revealed the exact location where VIPER will land. NASA has said that its golf cart-sized rover will land close to the western edge of Nobile Crater. The 73km-wide depression is near the south police of the Moon and remains almost permanently in shadow. The VIPER mission is part of NASA’s Artemis program that will help researchers in the proposed human exploration of the Moon. NASA plans to send astronauts to the moon and the VIPER mission can be considered the first step in that direction. This is because VIPER would search for the presence of water-ice on the lunar surface. Astronauts could mine ice during their stay at Moon and use it as drinking water and rocket fuel. This could pave the way for long-term presence of humans on the only natural satellite of Earth. It must be noted that under its Artemis program, the space agency would send the first woman and the first person of colour on the lunar surface.

The rover will fly to the Moon aboard a Grigin lander built by Pittsburgh-based company Astrobotic. It will be launched atop on a SpaceX Falcon-Heavy rocket. Daniel Andrews, VIPER project manager, said that select a landing site for the mission was an important decision. “It took our researchers years to finalize a landing site. They evaluated the polar region very deeply before decided that VIPER will explore it. It was not only important but an exciting decision to make. VIPER is all set to walk into uncharted territory. It will perform the very critical tasks and pave the way for future human space exploration,” Andrews said. The location picked for the landing of the VIPER is of the coldest areas in our solar system. The South Pole has not been explored by any prior missions to the Moon. The studies about the region have so far been done by scientists using remote sensing instruments. This includes the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite of the US space agency. But these studies helped scientists to reach to the conclusion that any possibility of the presence of ice and other potential resources would only be in permanently shadowed areas near the poles.

Thomas Zurbuchen, the associate administrator for science at NASA Headquarters, said that data provided by VIPER will help lunar scientists around the world have better understand of the Moon. “VIPER, which will be powered by solar power, will start providing information once it will land on the lunar surface. The rover will try to look for any presence of water and other resources on the lunar surface. It will explore South Pole and areas around Nobile Crater. The information provided by the VIPER will also help future Artemis missions to the Moon. This will help scientists better understand the environment of the lunar surface which so far remains unexplored,” Zurbuchen said. Nobile is a crater on the lunar surface that was formed after a collision with another smaller celestial body. The part of the Moon is almost permanently covered in shadows. This leads to a lower temperature and allowing ice to exist. There are some more accessible craters around Nobile and could be ideal locations for VIPER to search for ice. The area of the Nobile Crater is around 36 square miles. VIPER will weigh around 450 kgs or 950 pound and will continue to search for water ice for at least 100 Earth days. The rover will use a drill and three spectrometers to obtain samples as deep as 3.3 feet or 1 meter underground.

NASA Returns To Oregon To Test Spacesuits Technology For Artemis Program

September 21, 2021 by Spencer Edward

NASA is testing spacesuits for its Artemis program. The testing is being done in Oregon. The testing echoes the six decades-old space race. Finding the right spacesuit is crucial in determining the success of the mission as the US plans to return humans to Moon after 50 years. Oregon has a special place in NASA’s space journey. Researchers said that the rugged and volcanic terrain had helped the agency to train astronauts and find the right spacesuit technology. The agency is hopes that returning to Oregon will contribute actively to planning the Moon return mission. Researchers are compiling research from several spacesuits tests. According to NASA, Oregon is the place on Earth to provide training to astronauts for Artemis-like missions.

NASA said that a crew of 10 visited central Oregon in August. The crew members tested equipment that astronauts will carry to Moon. The testing was done on volcanic terrain. This helped the crew to replicate conditions that astronauts will face when they land on Moon and Mars. Under the Artemis program, NASA will land humans on Moon by 2024. The agency can launch a crewed mission to Mars by 2030. The Artemis mission will see two astronauts including the first woman landing on Earth’s lone moon. They will spend around seven days on Moon. This mission will also help in advancing a crewed Mars mission. Apollo 17 was NASA’s last Moon landing mission in 1972. No space agency has since then landed humans on the lunar surface.

NASA said that testing technology in a real environment is crucial. It will help in ironing out the possible complexities that astronauts may face. The agency expects that results obtained during the testing will work. Notably, NASA had in the 1960s conducted similar tests in Oregon. Apollo program trainees spent days in Oregon to study the diverse landscapes. The results will be written in technical papers. This will help the next generation astronauts to learn about the spacesuits for moon exploration. The data will also be contributing to developing more advanced suits for future missions.

Google Owned Fitbit Launches New Feature For Recording Snoring And Other Sounds For Its Smartwatches

September 20, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Fitbit has announced to launch a new feature to detect snoring and background sounds. The company is rolling out the Noise and Snore detection feature for its smartwatches. It will give users insights into snoring and other sounds. Users will require enabling the feature. For this, they will have to go to the Sleep page on Fitbit’s app. The feature will use the microphone of the device. The company has added a ‘Check for snoring‘ card on the Sleep page. Enabling it will activate the feature. Users can learn more about the app by visiting the ‘Learn more’. According to Fitbit, the app will record two metrics. These are Sound intensity and Snoring events. Fitbit was acquired by search engine giant Google in January this year.

Fitbit said that the microphone of the device will record noise-related information in the environment. It will collect data when Fitbit detects that the user is asleep. Fitbit will make a recording by analyzing the noise level. The feature will also record information of other people in the room. The device won’t distinguish among people who are snoring in a room. It means that Fitbit will start recording sounds if it was not from the person wearing the device in a common room. Fitbit will, however, make efforts to differentiate between snoring and other sounds once it detects a louder noise above the baseline level. Users can disable the Noise and Snore detection feature by going to Settings.

The new feature will let users hear the ambient noise. Fitbit has also rolled out an update for its app on the Play Store. The company said that the new feature will affect the device’s battery capacity as it will use the microphone. The company has recommended that users should keep their device’s battery charge at 40 percent before using the feature. Users can delete the snoring and other sounds at any time. Fitbit said that the new feature will help in diagnosing the medical conditions of individuals and proper treatment. Google after acquiring Fitbit had said that it will work towards making health and wellness accessible to people.

Salesforce CEO To Help Relocate Employees Concerned Over Abortion Laws

September 17, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Salesforce chief executive officer Marc Benioff has taken concerns of employees over new abortion laws seriously and has offered all assistance to those who want to relocate. The announcement has been made after several employees raised concern over abortion access in the state where they live. However, the company has not referred to any specific state in its message to employees. The message to thousands of employees was sent on Slack. It is pertinent to mention that new legislation went into effect in Texas this week and it allows abortions only before most women know they are pregnant.

“This is a very personal issue and has a direct impact on each one of us,” the message reads. “If our employees face any concerns or have any issue while accessing reproductive healthcare in their state, Salesforce will help relocate them and members of their immediate family.” The software giant is not the first company to offer such assistance to those who need help in this regard in Texas. Companies like Uber, Lyft, and dating site Bumble have already announced that they would support people in this. This comes as the US Department of Justice has sued the state over its new abortion law.

Without directly mentioning the name of the state, the company said that it stands with all women employees of Salesforce. Later, Benioff did say that Texas was in the mind when the company sent the Slack message. The new law of Texas bans puts a blanket ban on abortion after weeks. This is the time frame before which most people don’t even realize that they are pregnant. There is no exception in the law and empowers anyone to sue someone for helping in abortion in any way. This not only includes hospital or health care services but also those who help pay for the procedure. This even includes those who drive the person to the hospital for the procedure.

Arizona Sells USD 93 Million Unilever Bonds Over Ben & Jerry’s Israel Sales Ban

September 16, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Arizona has decided to divest state funds from Unilever over its subsidiary’s decision to stop selling its ice cream in Israeli-occupied territories. The decision is a result of anti-Israel boycott laws that bar Arizona from investing in businesses that are taking part in boycotts of Israel. The announcement has been made by Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee. The decision announced by Yee was mandated by a 2019 state law. The law prohibits the state government agencies from holding investments or doing business of more than USD 100,000 with any company that boycotts Israel or its territories. The state has already reduced its investment in the company, which owns Ben & Jerry’s, by USD 90 million in June. The state would reduce the investment in Unilever to zero by September 21. The information has been shared with Richard Williams of Unilever Investor Relations via an email sent by Yee. This is when Ben & Jerry’s has maintained that the decision is not a boycott. The company had announced earlier this year that it would stop selling ice cream in east Jerusalem and the West Bank by the end of 2022.

Ben & Jerry’s, which is based in Vermont, said that the company hears and recognizes the concerns shared by its trusted partners and fans. “We strongly believe that this is inconsistent with our values for the company’s ice cream to be sold in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the company said in a statement. Arizona seems to be the first state with such laws or regulations that are on the path of being fully divested from Unilever following the decision announced by Ben & Jerry’s. Yee said that an ultimatum was given to Unilever in August. “Unilever was warned about consequences in case it fails to comply with Arizona law. The company chose to face consequences,” Yee said. Under the law, Arizona is not allowed to invest or sign any kind of contract with anyone boycotting Israel. This is defined as any action that is intended to limit the investment in Israel. Commenting on the development, Unilever said the decision does not reflect an endorsement of the BDS movement. “Unilever acquired Ben & Jerry’s in the year 2000. It has always been the part of the acquisition agreement that we recognize and accept the decisions taken by its independent board,” the company said. The ice cream company has been insisting that it is still doing business in the country.

Laura Peterson, public relations manager for Ben & Jerry’s, said that the company is not boycotting Israel. “We are going to stay in Israel despite the fact that the company will no longer sell ice cream in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. We will very much stay in Israel but through a different business arrangement,” Peterson said. The board had earlier said that staying in the occupied territories was ‘inconsistent with the company’s values.” Israel reacted strongly to the development. The country even urged US governors to take strict action against the company under anti-boycott laws. Meanwhile, Illinois warned the company of action after the company’s board decided the move. Similarly, Florida and some other states are taking action against the company. But US groups who have extended support to Israel are divided over the move. They are not sure if taking action against the company would be appropriate. It must be noted that Arizona law was enacted in the year 2016. It was later revised in 2019.

Jupiter Exotic Just Like Sun Surface, Impossible For Spaceship To Fly Through

September 15, 2021 by Spencer Edward

The atmosphere at Jupiter is mostly made up of hydrogen and helium. This makes that gas giant like the Sun. The planet is as exotic as the Sun’s surface. It is covered in dense red, yellow, white, and brown clouds. This gives an illusion that Jupiter has stripes. In total, nine spacecraft have visited the planet. No mission has so far passed through the planet. According to NASA, it has plunged three spacecraft into gas planets. Two of them are Galileo and Cassini. Their plunge marked the end of their respective missions. Galileo’s mission ended in September 2003. The mission ended as the spacecraft plummeted into the gas giant’s atmosphere. The mission was launched in 1989. The mission studied Jupiter and its moons.

The Cassini spacecraft plunged into Saturn in 2017. Saturn is another gas giant and lies next to Jupiter. Galileo’s mission was, however, different. It arrived at Jupiter with a special passenger. The spacecraft carried a probe. The probe was designed to drop into Jupiter’s atmosphere. Notably, NASA’s contact with Galileo was lost just an hour after it reached around 93 miles into the atmosphere. The agency is not sure how deep the probe was able to travel before Jupiter’s high temperatures and pressures destroyed it. Scientists are also unaware of a spacecraft can survive through the atmosphere of Jupiter and Saturn to land or crash on a solid surface which the two gas giants may not have.

It is highly unlikely that a spacecraft remain intact during its passage through a Jupiter-like planet. The problem is that such a planet’s density, pressure, and temperature are very high and increase at different levels during the plunge. According to scientists, Jupiter’s center is filled with hydrogen which becomes a liquid metal. This makes the planet exotic just like the Sun. The third mission to Jupiter, Juno, is still active. Juno was launched in 2011. It entered the planet’s orbit in 2016. NASA has managed to figure out through Juno that the planet doesn’t have a solid core. Jupiter can be seen from Earth. It is the second brightest planet that s visible from Earth after Venus in the night.

Supply Chain Blockage Amid Spread of the Delta Variant Slowing China’s Economy

September 8, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Amid a logistics problem caused as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, China’s economy slowed down this month. From 50.4 in July, an official survey of industrial activity dropped to 50.1 in August. Even though it was slightly beyond the 50-point expansion threshold, it was nevertheless the lowest pace of development since the pandemic’s outbreak in 2009. For the first time since April 2020, the Caixin manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) dropped to 49.2 in August. More worrisome is that service sectors, which already represent a large share of the world’s second-biggest economy, the Purchasing Managers’ Index for non-manufacturing fell to 47.5 from 53.3 in July.

Despite the pandemic, China’s GDP grew last year while others fell. Officials took drastic steps to slow the infection rates, this included shutting down cities, banning flights, and stopping commerce. The Delta variant has been contained as a result of the tough and inflexible policy but at the price of economic operations. As a result of “travel restrictions reinstituted and customers being more apprehensive amidst the ongoing viral flare-up,” he said the non-manufacturing PMI fell. Things have gotten worse as a result of ongoing supply system issues throughout the world Supply chains are further disrupted by container constraints, industrial closures in Vietnam, and the consequences of harbor shutdowns in China.  A dock worker who worked at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, south of Shanghai tested positive for Covid-19, causing the port to be closed for weeks, contributing to the delay induced by a prior shutdown.

Evans-Pritchard stated, “The survey breakdown continues to show indicators of supply constraints, with delivery delays increasing as businesses continue to draw out their raw material stockpiles.” The country is also grappling with a slew of other issues, such as cholera epidemics, and Beijing has also launched a major crackdown against companies, which has affected various businesses such as the tech industry, private schools, etc., have gotten restricted by the crackdown. Oanda’s Jeffrey Halley, a senior market analyst for the Asia Pacific, said that the crackdowns, particularly in IT and education, “are hurting both unemployment worries among those impacted and general market optimism as fears of further interventions increase.” As long as Covid cases in China remain in control, Evans-Pritchard anticipated most of the deterioration recorded on Tuesday to recover. “Even with the instability created by China’s recent viral outbreak, the economy appears to be returning to normal,” he said. Information regarding more of such aspects affecting marketplaces around the world can be found at various research platforms.

Highly Anticipated EV Maker Canoo Is Ready to Begin Production

September 7, 2021 by Spencer Edward

As per Canoo’s second-quarter financial report, the business has recruited hundreds of people and is closing in on the manufacturing date, but crucial hurdles like securing a battery source persist. Canoo’s financial report came only a few weeks after the firm announced VDL Nedcar as their lifestyle vehicle’s contract production partner at the inaugural investor affairs day. Canoo projected at the moment that perhaps the Redcar factory could produce 1,000 vehicles for America as well as European countries in 2022, with a goal of 15,000 units by 2023. CEO Tony Aquila stated in Monday’s earnings conference that the business now expects 25,000 vehicles in 2023. Canoo also offered information on its intentions to establish a United States-based manufacturing facility for its pickup trucks as well as multifunctional delivery vehicles, which it refers to as a “mega microfactory.” The electric vehicle company revealed plans to open its first plant in Oklahoma in June.

To facilitate the plant and Phase 2 of production, the state legislature has contributed $300 million in non-dilutive monetary incentives. In Monday’s earnings conference, Aquila stated, “This two-pronged approach is critical for a couple of reasons.” “Collaborating with Redcar as a new OEM will enable us to fine-tune our production process. It will enable us to geologically broaden our production activities and place us to enhance our, products and volumes to acclimate to shifting market requirements and create distribution flexibility while enhancing our production expertise, which will be implemented in our Oklahoma production facility. Within the first 36 months, Aquila estimates that approximately a third of Oklahoma’s investment will be accessible. This funding will aid the company’s growth as it enters the Gamma phase, which indicates that Canoo is nearing its debut date.

Canoo grew its staff from 230 to 656 workers in a year, with software and hardware developers accounting for 70% of the total. The startup’s operational expenditures have surged from $19.8 million to $104.3 million years over year, with R&D accounting for most of the increase. The spike in pre-revenue expenditures indicates that Canoo is making effort toward its manufacturing targets. Canoo is in the last stages of choosing a construction manager, architect, and engineering company, according to Aquila, and will probably have further construction updates before the end of this quarter. In the third quarter, the firm is still looking for a battery supplier, a move that is becoming extremely relevant as most OEMs look to limit their supply system through strategic partnerships. Data regarding various company collaborations in the EV market are abundantly available online. The leisure vehicle is undoubtedly nearer to manufacturing, although Aquila claimed preorders for Canoo’s other 2 vehicles, the pickup truck as well as the multifunctional delivery vehicle, are the most desired out of the 9,500 non-binding refundable orders placed.

Walmart Prepares For Holiday Shopping Rush, Plans To Hire 20,000 Supply Chain Employees

September 6, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Walmart has started to prepare for the upcoming holiday shopping rush and has announced that it is planning to hire around 20,000 employees. The retail giant said that the employees hired will be both permanent full-time and part-time workers. The big-box retailer said that the roles will be in the supply chain. The employees will work across the distribution centers of the company. They will also work at fulfillment centers and transportation offices. It said that the new hiring will support the growth of the company. It will provide an average wage of USD 20.37 per hour to supply chain associated, the company said in the corporate blog post. Walmart will hold a special hiring event for this and it will be organized on September 8 and 9.

Walmart is hiring more workers as companies are facing a staff crunch. There is fierce competition among companies for workers ever since the coronavirus struck. As companies face problems in hiring the required workforce, Walmart has sweetened the deal by offering special bonuses to those working in warehouses. Walmart also announced recently that it would cover 100 percent college tuition and textbook costs. The pandemic has also halted manufacturing and congested ports across the globe have resulted in delays. Not only this, it resulted in items going out of stock and higher prices for the products. These things have put retailers in a situation where they are worried whether they would be able to fulfill higher demands during the peak season of gift-giving. This is especially when more and more people are opting for online shopping.

Meanwhile, Walmart has decided to ramp up the supply chain and has increased investment for it. The company is also adding advanced and high-tech automated systems at selected locations. This will help the company pick and pack online grocery orders. Earlier in August, the company said that it has witnessed a strong surge in demand for back-to-school supplies, luggage, apparel, and more. Commenting on the increase in demand, Walmart’s Chief financial officer Brett Biggs said that the company has increased lead times for orders. The company has now hired dedicated vessels to reduce the time period of import.

Georgia: Governor Removes COVID-19 Mandates for Businesses as Infections Surge

September 4, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Under a recent executive order, businesses in the state of Georgia will not be required to follow any regional COVID-19 restrictions such as mask mandates or vaccination requirements, despite the state’s healthcare facilities being overburdened with COVID-19 patients. Governor Brian Kemp signed the order on Thursday preventing business owners from being forced to adhere to COVID-19 policies introduced by the local government. This measure was meant to protect recuperating businesses from another wave of shutdowns, according to the Republican governor. It will not stop firms from following local regulations, although he claims the rules will not be enforced.

Local authorities will not be allowed to impose business owners to comply with the state’s mask regulation, the vaccination policy, and any other restraint which could result in workers being fired, profits plummeting, and businesses having to close. In response to an increase in COVID-19 infections, numerous communities in Georgia have reinstated mask requirements. Atlanta enacted a rule regulating mask usage in public locations earlier this month. Decatur, which is close by, has enacted a similar ordinance, though firms can choose not to comply.

The city of Savannah has enacted a mask requirement for certain enclosed public venues, but not for business owners. As per experts at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, there is indeed a significant increase in the rate of infections of COVID-19 across districts in Georgia. The amount of vacant intensive care units in the region are becoming less available. Based on the most recent statistics from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Georgia’s ICU capacity stands at 94% occupied. The Gainesville facility of Northeast Georgia’s Health System is overloaded with COVID-19 cases. As people take up beds, local hospitals reported to ABC News on Thursday that medics have been examining certain patients requiring emergency treatment within their ambulances while waiting for a bed to become available. For an additional number of patients, the facility has put up tents beside the emergency unit.

According to hospital authorities, certain facilities in the Atlanta metropolitan area are using ambulances whenever their emergency units are fully occupied. Doctors from several of the state’s top medical centers have urged individuals to be vaccinated. As per various online sources, this factor is expected to create a huge demand for medical supplies and is expected to put stress on medical supply manufacturers.

NASA Researchers Find New Technique To Shield International Space Station From Space Radiation Risk

August 26, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Space radiation is very dangerous. Exposure to it could pose risk to life. Space radiation has a sufficient amount of energy that can affect the DNA and cause damages to a cell. This can lead to a series of serious health problems and its effects could be experienced in a long term. Therefore, astronauts need to shield themselves from space radiation when they are in space. To protect astronauts from the risk of exposure to radiation at the International Space Station, NASA has developed a technique that will protect the rotating laboratory from harmful rays. The ISS experiences radiation as it flies in the low Earth orbit. Notably, the space radiation is greater at higher latitudes.

The ISS is inclined nearly 51 degrees as it circles the Earth. It is exposed to more radiation than space shuttles. A space shuttle flies at 28 degrees and faces less radiation than the ISS. NASA researchers said that the new technique will help in predicting the radiation risk while planning future space missions. Researchers said that there are three main sources of space radiation. They originate from particles shot during solar flares; that are trapped in the magnetic field of Earth, and galactic cosmic rays generated outside the solar system. Researchers are studying how ISS astronauts’ DNA responds when they are exposed to Earth radiation and during spaceflight. Researchers will measure the changes in their chromosomes to determine the level of risk.

Researchers believe that several factors including age and sex also have a role in this. This will help astronauts to find methods and develop techniques to protect them from space radiation. Researchers measured the baseline chromosomal status of astronauts before they flew to the ISS. They examined blood cells to get the status. These blood cells were then exposed to gamma-ray. This provided an opportunity to measure the chromosomal changes. Researchers again collected blood samples from the astronauts after their return from the ISS to measure alterations in the chromosome. They discovered a higher level of irregularities in the baseline chromosome of older astronauts than the younger members.

Six Major Climatic Challenges Faced by Humans as Per The IPCC Report 2021

August 22, 2021 by Spencer Edward

With floods and fires, the summertime of 2021 has become one of the most devastating periods throughout the world, indicating that the effects of global warming are already pervasive and intensifying. These disasters, and their link to human-caused global warming, is only one of the major topics discussed in a landmark climate report issued on Monday by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It is a component of the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, which was developed by over 230 prominent scientists from across the globe. This is the most important climate study made by the scientific community in decades. According to the report, the following are the major challenges faced by humanity as a result of climate change.

C02 levels

Carbon dioxide emissions in the environment are greater today than they have been in the last 2 million years. Today, the atmosphere contains a minimum of 800,000 years’ worth of methane. Moreover, the rate of greenhouse gas emissions outpaces all climate cycles over the exact same time span.

Rising temperatures

Heat readings have surged quicker in the previous half-century than during any other timeframe in the last 2 millenniums. The mean global surface temperature was 1.1° Celsius warmer in 2011–2020 when compared to that from 1850–1900, with land heating faster than the ocean. This decade is expected to be warmer than any time since the previous interglacial period that occurred 125,000 years ago.

Ice melt

Rising air temperatures are melting icebergs at a previously unrecorded pace for the 21st century. The Arctic sea ice cover has gone lower than it has ever been in the past ten centuries. Glacier retreat has been unparalleled in the previous two millennia, with nearly all the glaciers in the world simultaneously receding since the 50s.

Heatwaves

Heatwaves are the most evident link between rising global temperatures and climate change. According to the research, they have gotten more regular and intense over most geographical regions since the 1950s. The latest anomalies would have been highly unlikely if the global climate had not been influenced by humans. It also mentions that oceanic heatwaves, which are abnormally high temperatures occurring in ocean waters, have roughly quadrupled since the 80s.

Precipitation

As atmospheric temperature increases, the air can store more water, resulting in greater precipitation. As a result, the intensity and frequency of heavy rainfall occurrences have escalated since 1950.

Tropical cyclones

Tropical storms and cyclones patterns are changing as sea temperatures rise and additional atmospheric moisture is present. During the previous 40 years, the global frequency of big storms has increased substantially.

China’s Mars Rover Zhurong Completes Planned Exploration Tasks, Still In Good Condition

August 20, 2021 by Spencer Edward

China has described its Mars exploration mission as a complete success. The announcement came after the rover completed its planned exploration tasks on the Red Planet. China’s Mars exploration mission is named Tianwen-1. The name of the rover is Zhurong. This is China’s first Mars exploration mission. The mission was launched in July 2020. The probe entered into the Martian orbit in February this year. The probe circled the planned to identify a landing site for Zhurong. The rover landed on the planet’s surface on May 14. It touched down at Utopia Planitia which is a large plain. Zhurong is the first Mars rover to land on another planet. It has since then sent several photographs of the Red Planet.

According to Zhurong’s designer, the rover achieved a milestone in the last 90 Martian days. It has reached the initial working target. The rover is still in healthy condition. It is fastly moving ahead on the surface. The rover is continuing with the exploration task. The rover has covered a distance of 889 meters in the last three months. The orbiter is also in good condition. Both the orbiter and rover are providing vital data. Chinese researchers said that the mission has helped them to learn more about the Earth’s neighbor that is believed to have hosted Earth-like life. China is hopeful that Tianwen-1 will allow scientists to develop and determine the path for future missions that include landing astronauts on the planet and deep space exploration.

According to China, both the orbiter and rover have collected 420 gigabytes of data. This includes visuals of land, analysis of Martian soil, and the atmosphere. The probe will allow scientists to understand the planet’s atmosphere in a better way. The Martian atmosphere is very thin. The temperature drops to minus 50 degrees Celsius in some parts. The solar outage is a big challenge on mars. The sunlight is the main source of energy for the rover’s battery system. The cold and little sunlight could affect its communication system. By mid-September, Mars and Earth will be farthest apart as the Sun will be between the two planets. Sun’s radiation could pose a difficulty in sending and receiving signals from the orbiter and rover.

Elon Musk Hopes Tesla’s Gigafactory In Berlin Will Produce First Car As Soon As In October

August 17, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk recently said that he is hopeful that Gigafactory in Germany’s Berlin would start production of cars as soon as in October. Musk said this after visiting the plant in Grünheide, near Berlin. The expected starting date of the production at Tesla’s first European plant has been pushed back and the company has blamed bureaucratic hurdles of the country for it. There are some environmental concerns too. The factory is facing resistance from the local public. All these have resulted in the delay. This is the reason why the Tesla CEO met the leaders of the German state Brandenburg. Dietmar Woidke, state premier of Brandenburg, too attended the meeting. The information was shared by Economy Minister Joerg Steinbach on Twitter. Steinbach also posted a picture of Musk while sharing the information.”It was a very relaxed evening meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The meeting was held in an atmosphere of mutual trust during which we discussed the remaining tasks. Thank you Elon Musk and your family for the visit,” Steinbach wrote on the microblogging site. Steinbach tweeted this soon after public flight data showed that the electric-vehicle entrepreneur’s jet landed in Germany where Musk is facing delay in trying to begin the production at the new manufacturing site.

The meeting comes as Armin Laschet is visited Tesla’s site. Laschet is the conservative candidate and he met local staff as part of his election campaign. The progress at the plant has been slow because of several issues. Musk, who has blamed German red tape for the delays, had visited the factory in May as well. The expected date for starting production has already been pushed back by Tesla. The factory is now expected to start production in late 2021. But the factory is yet to give final approval from the environmental agency in Brandenburg. Any further delay in granting approval means that starting of production would be possible in 2022. This is the reason Musk has been regularly visiting Germany. Speaking about a recent visit to the plant, Musk said – “We are looking forward to getting the approval at the earliest. If everything goes in a planned manner and we are fortunate enough, the production is likely to begin in October.” But getting required approvals is not the only challenge faced by Musk at the moment. Lately, he called two semiconductor manufacturers ‘problematic.’ Musk said that because of the supply shortage of key components that are used in electric vehicles produced by Tesla. The two of the world’s largest chipmakers who were pointed out by Musk are – Japan’s Renesas and Germany’s Bosch.

The auto industry is facing a shortage of chips, which are used in most electronic devices. The shortage continues to hurt the production of vehicles. Several manufacturing sites have to slow down the production as demand outstrips supply. The main reason behind the shortage of chips is the coronavirus pandemic. When the coronavirus pandemic struck, almost all factories and manufacturing were forced to close operations. But the demand for vehicles picked up much faster than expected, resulting in a shortage of chips. Also, technologies like 5G which require heavy chips are also the cause. “It is well known that cars manufactured by Tesla in the first quarter are for export and that in the second quarter is for the local market. It is public that we are operating under extreme supply-chain limitations. By far, most problematic are Renesas and Bosch,” Musk had said while replying to Ark Investment Management Chief Executive Cathie Wood. But there is some good news for Tesla investors as well as semiconductor manufacturer Bosch has is expected to start production of automotive chips in its new factory in Germany. The production is likely to begin by next month.

It is hugely popular and attracts young people. It has now surpassed Facebook as the most downloaded app. According to a global survey of downloads conducted in 2020, TikTok grabbed the first rank in the list of social media providers. TikTok was followed by Facebook. While Facebook was the second most downloaded app, other apps owned by the US-based social media company too figured in the list. WhatsApp became the third-highest downloaded app. The fourth and fight positions were held by Instagram and Facebook Messenger, respectively. Notably, Facebook Messenger was most downloaded in 2019. It was followed by Facebook’s main app and WhatsApp.

Social media platforms saw a rise in demand during the pandemic. This period also saw users giving priority to data privacy. The other apps that figured in the latest list are Snapchat, Telegram, Likee, Pinterest, and Twitter. Notably, TikTok had come under fire from the US government over its links to the Chinese military. However, the app’s popularity grew despite challenges and went on to become the leading download. The pandemic also contributed to the numbers, especially from Europe and South America.

TikTok’s parent company ByteDance in 2017 launched the international version of the app. It attracted users from around the world because of its frivolous nature. It offers easy editing tools to make the content engaging. The company follows trends and thus users are attracted to it. The funny videos increase the engagement time. Health Experts From The CDC Claim Raw Cake Mix Might Be Linked To An Outbreak Of E. Coli In The United States

August 9, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Many people tend to taste their recipes while they cook the food despite understanding the risks of having raw foods. Recently, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that people should not taste or eat raw cake mix as it might lead to a severe illness. The agency officials have been examining a possible link between raw cake mix and an outbreak of E. coli. Health experts have said that people should not taste or eat undercooked cake mix or its ingredients before it is completely ready. The CDC has been gathering data regarding the outbreak of E. coli with the help of local public health officials and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to find out the cause of the bacterial contamination. Health officials from the CDC have said that people should bake store-bought and homemade cake mixes for sufficient time in the oven before eating them. Experts have cautioned that consuming raw cake batter might lead to serious illness as it might contain deadly bacteria. When raw cake mix is properly baked or cooked in the oven for enough time, it kills the bacteria. As per an investigation that has been conducted by the CDC, nearly 16 people have fallen sick across 12 states in the US after they have been diagnosed with E. coli. States such as Virginia, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Nebraska, Illinois, Utah, Oregon, Iowa, and Washington have reported confirmed cases of E. coli. Around eight of 16 patients have been interviewed by the health experts so far. All of them have said that they have tasted or eaten raw cake mix within a week before they have fallen ill. All of them have had diverse brands and varieties of the cake mix.

The officials from the CDC have confirmed that all known patients of E. coli have been women who have been in the age group of 2 to 73 years with an average age of 13 years. Health experts have said that around seven of 16 infected patients have been admitted to the hospital due to their severe condition. However, no deaths have been reported yet. One of the 16 infected patients has been diagnosed with a kind of kidney failure that is known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The officials from the CDC have said that E. coli can lead to symptoms of food poisoning, stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. They have said that raw batter might carry E. coli bacteria that can lead to severe food poisoning if eaten without properly cooking it. As per the CDC observations, symptoms of bacterial infection differ in each patient. More often, infection leads to bloody vomiting and diarrhea and a low-grade fever of nearly 101 degrees Fahrenheit. Health experts have said that infection lasts for five to seven days and patients feel better after a week. The federal agency has said that the majority of people who are infected with E. coli start feeling ill three to four days after eating contaminated food. Patients can start showing up symptoms anywhere from one to 10 days after being exposed to bacteria, said the experts.

Health experts from the CDC who have been investigating the outbreak of E. coli have said that anyone who is suffering from diarrhea that is lasting for more than three days or those who are dealing with diarrhea along with a fever that is greater than 102 degrees Fahrenheit and so much vomiting that they are not able to keep liquids down in stomach should immediately consult their health care providers. While the investigation into cake mix is in process, experts have said that people should avoid tasting or eating any kind of raw cake mix dough to keep the infection at bay. The agency has recently released Say No To Raw Dough food safety initiative. The initiative says that in 2016 and 2019, nearly two outbreaks of E. coli have sickened nearly more than 80 people in the United States. Health experts have warned about raw or undercooked eggs as well. They have said that undercooked eggs might contain bacteria known as Salmonella, a deadly bacteria that can result in food poisoning if consumed. Health experts from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have said that people should not taste or consume raw cake mix dough or batter whether it is for tortillas, pancakes, biscuits, cookies, pizza, or crafts that are prepared out of raw flour such as homemade play dough or holiday decoratives. They have warned that parents should not allow children to play with or eat homemade play-dough. As per the new initiative, people should try to avoid using raw flour in recipes like smoothies and milkshakes. People should wash their hands and surfaces after handling raw flour or dough. If people are using packaged cake mix, they should make sure that they are following instructions and recipes mentioned on the packet correctly and baking the food at the right temperature for a specified time in the oven.

Walmart To Pay 100 Per Cent Of College Tuition, Books For Its 1.5 Million Employees In United States

August 2, 2021 by Spencer Edward

Walmart has announced that it will now pay 100 percent of the college tuition and book costs for its around 1.5 million employees in the United States. The decision will be applicable from August 16. The retail giant is the largest private employer in the country and this announcement has been to attract as well as retain talent in a tight job market. Most employers are facing a tough time while retaining their workforce after the pandemic. They are announcing several perks to attract new workers as life is limping back to normalcy with more and more people being vaccinated for the Covid-19. As the number of coronavirus cases is depleting, all major offices are opening and trying to reach their full strength. But they are short of workers as several companies had laid off employees when the pandemic struck and led to the lockdown. Now when things are back to normal, employees are not willing to return. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the retail industry had around 974,000 unfulfilled jobs in the month of May. Because of this scarcity of workers, Walmart had raised the minimum wage of around 425,000 employees.

The move was intended at retaining current workers. After the raise, Walmart workers are now getting at USD 13 an hour. The minimum wage given by the retail giant is USD 11 an hour. This was below that what is being paid by its competitors such as Amazon and Target. Hourly starting wages given by these companies are considerably higher than Walmart. Other retailers are also increasing wages, offering referral bonuses and giving more benefits as they continue to hunt for more employees. Meanwhile, the new announcement made by Walmart will be applicable to some schools in the country. The academic partners for this program include likes of University of Arizona and Southern New Hampshire University. The company said that the number of academics partners has now increased to 10 as it recently added four more. The new partners include Johnson & Wales University and the University of Arizona. They will offer more certificate options and degrees in areas like business administration. These partners will also provide degrees in cybersecurity and the supply chain. In order to get benefits of the program, participants need to be full-time or part-time employees at the retail giant. With the help of these initiatives, Walmart is apparently trying to prepare workers for the jobs of the future.

The company also said that it will drop its ongoing USD 1 per day fee for workers who are part of its Live Better U education program. Under this program, the fee was paid by workers of Sam’s Club and Walmart who were willing to pursue a course and earn a degree. The program was launched in the year 2018. According to the company, there were around 52,000 workers who took part in the program. Out of them, around 8,000 have already graduated. Lorraine Stomski, senior vice president of learning and leadership at Walmart said that the decision of eradicating the USD 1 fee will remove the financial barrier faced by some employees while getting enrolled for the program. “We want to give them an opportunity to grow at Walmart. This will help them build better lives not for themselves but also for their families. The decision is just another way to support our workers. We have tried to remove the barriers that very often keep your workers away from learning. This is one of the largest investments on the education of the American workforce,” Stomski said.
