A Report Shows Elderly People Put On Ventilators Don’t Survive Much

May 26, 2020 by Timothy

The coronavirus has infected millions of people and killed thousands; however, after analyzing the data, doctors are more concerned about elderly and infant people. A Newyork hospital report shows that older adults diagnosed with coronavirus and put on ventilators are hardly surviving. Doctors who made the report said they were quite shocked after seeing so many older adults dying because of coronavirus. Researchers analyzed 257 patients who were admitted into the hospital from March 2 to April 1; out of them, two-third were male patients, and the median age of the patient was 62. Out of these patients who were aged above 80 and put on ventilators couldn’t survive.

The mortality rate in older people is quite high compared to those who are fit and healthy. The majority of these patients surveyed were hospitalized in Allen and Milstein hospital. Doctors said they didn’t see any critical patients aged below thirty. People who are having a high mortality rate are less prone to coronavirus. Young people who got infected with coronavirus didn’t see that much worse condition as compared to those elderly people who had to put on ventilators. Doctors said this study shows people who have elderly people in their family should discuss the effects of the novel coronavirus.

The mortality rate in them varies from 50-97 percent. Survey of people who put on ventilators shows nearly 3% of the patients could survive, and the death rate was around 24.5%. Things are getting harder every day for older adults since they have a more significant threat of dying from coronavirus because of the low immunity system. Some are saying to measure the patients’ condition before putting them on ventilators. Family members of elderly adults can predict what their next decision should be considering the situation.

May 15, 2020 by Timothy

The current pandemic situation has affected all the industry, including tech also. However, technology is that sector which is being used by government officials to determine their next strategy. Recently a data company released the report based upon users location data, and they tried to figure out how many people are following social distancing as prescribed. The report shows more than 50% of people stayed at home on Easter Day, which was quite an excellent achievement considering it was a festival; still, people stayed at their home. SafeGraph is the company that gathered the data of people’s cell phones, and for this study, they analyzed more than 18 million cell phone uses data.

The company looked at the pattern of how many people are staying at home by tracking their location, and they found out that after Easter day, the percentage of people staying home decreased frequently. On 27th April, it was approximately 40% of the analyzed cell phone users who stayed at home. Federal government, including state government planning of reopening economics based on the number of people, have been locked down for the last month. However, this report shows a different side of the picture.

SafeGraph said that they witnessed many regions following social distancing as prescribed mainly in counties areas; still, some areas didn’t manage to do so. A few people are criticizing this data because they are violating their privacy issues. However, the company said they collected data of only those who gave permission. Many people have given consent to the health official apps like this one to provide the correct information about their location. Some experts are saying that the people who did not follow social distancing were because of the non-work travel they did, which might be an essential thing for them.

Blood Donations Declined Amid Ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic

March 26, 2020 by Timothy

Hospitals nationwide are terminating elective operations and lessening the quantity of blood they offer. All this is to keep or retain the blood supply. As per the American Association of Blood Banks, rapidly spreading COVID-19 has resulted in the cancellation of more than 4,000 blood donations in the U.S. Even more, the termination has resulted in a loss of around 130,000 blood donations. Well, it is bad news for patients who depend on continuous blood transfusions. AABB’s Chief Medical Officer and the director of the blood bank at the University of Minnesota Medical Center Dr. Claudia Cohn said these circumstances have led to a massive and unprecedented loss of donations.

Currently, they are seeking to delay or lessen the usage of blood, citing that they are failing to re-fill the stock at a higher rate. The American Red Cross noted the fact is someone requires blood every two seconds. Thus it is a probably dangerous condition for the agency’s exceptional health crisis. Even more, the American Red Cross is stepping up on calls for healthy Americans to donate blood between the coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, Mark C. Poloncarz, an Erie County Executive, has said the region has enough bloodstock that could last for a few days. As per the executive, the cancellation of elective operations could assist them in expanding the existing blood supply.

Meanwhile, ConnectLife and the Red Cross are advising organizations to conduct local blood camps. Apart from this, they are requesting donors to take appointments before donating blood locally. Jay Bonafede, the representative of the American Red Cross, said much of the blood drives are conducted at places like colleges and businesses which are closed now. Bonafede also noted that countrywide they are down around 200,000 blood units. Meanwhile, the US CDC recommends that healthy people donate blood while keeping appropriate social distancing measures. For now, health officials have not found any link between spreading new coronavirus and blood transmission.
